Arnold Schwarzenegger, 78, ramps up workouts amid Hollywood comeback

Arnold Schwarzenegger is all set to reprise one of his most famous roles, though key details are still under wraps. And no, it's not the Terminator.

A new Conan the Barbarian film is currently in development, and reportedly, it will be a continuation of the original movies that began with the 1982 classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The bodybuilding legend has confirmed his interest in reprising his iconic role. It will mark Schwarzenegger's return to the big screen after seven years.

The National Enquirer reported that the Austrian Oak is hitting the Gold's Gym to get into peak shape, and according to a source, “He’s pushing himself to the limit.”

Other reports indicate that Schwarzenegger remains physically active and continues to train, but he is not expected to regain the physique seen in the original films, as the role is being tailor-made to suit his current age.

The news of a potential sequel, right now being referred to as “King Conan,” has been floating around for many years, but only recently has been has recently gained traction again. It is reported that Top Gun: Maverick director Christopher McQuarrie has been roped in to direct the film. McQuarrie had previously expressed interest in developing a Conan project with Schwarzenegger.

Keeping in mind Arnold's actual age, the film will likely focus on an older Conan, who has spent decades ruling as king and has been drawn back into conflict.

As of right now, the film has not yet entered production or issued an official release date. The Conan franchise has experienced multiple stalled projects in the past, making the current development notable but not yet definitive.

Conan isn't the only iconic role people will see him in

At the Arnold Sports Festival held in Columbus, Ohio, Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed his plans to return to three of his original movies: Conan the Barbarian, Commando, and Predator.

He seemed particularly impressed by the latest Predator installments released in 2025, and he and director Dan Trachtenberg were in talks discussing Schwarzenegger's future in the series.

In 2025, he reprised his original character, Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer, in the animated anthology movie, Predator: Killer of Killers. He shared,

"Fox Studios has kind of rediscovered 'Arnold.' They’ve come to me and said, ‘We want you to do Predator,’ we just got a script for you to do Commando 2.'”
