Arnold Schwarzenegger's path to stardom was built on breaking rules, not following them. The bodybuilding legend recently detailed how he resisted his family's wishes and neighborhood norms. This early defiance forged the mindset that would define his entire career.
But by the time he turned 14, he chose to become a bodybuilder, which his father didn't fully understand or support, as he tried to convince him to pursue a career in music.
However, he then set out to become resistant and to set his own rules, which later in his life made him successful.
That story of a young Schwarzenegger, who broke the norm of society, was shared on the Theo Von podcast by the legend himself on June 5, 2025.

The Austrian Oak revealed, “Well, I was rebellious in a way because I mean, think about it. Soccer and track and field, they were kind of like the in sports. But when I was exposed to weightlifting and to powerlifting and to bodybuilding, I fell in love with that.”
Schwarzenegger admitted that he took inspiration from Reg Park and Steve Reeves. And when he saw the Hercules movie, he said, “I want to be like that. I don't want to be a top soccer player.” That was the first time the young Schwarzenegger showed resistance and started to brew his own dream of having “muscle like that…. Movies like that.”
He said, “So my parents thought that it was kind of what is that all about? Where did that come from? And uh, the whole neighborhood was kind of like, uh, wondering what is this guy doing training every day, two hours, three hours a day.”
However, once Schwarzenegger told Fortune that every time he was told to leave training and that he would never be successful, he would say, “This is not going to be for much longer because I’m going to move out of here. I want to be rich. I want to be somebody”.
So, the young Schwarzenegger set some rules for himself to get a body like his heroes. He said, “I came home, and instead of having lunch. I would put my sit-up board up on the kitchen table, and uh. I would be doing sit-ups, 500 sit-ups, doing lunch.
Totally a******* because I was driven by my vision, you know. So it was always there.”
By the time he became a full-grown adult bodybuilder and achieved success on the Mr. Olympia stage, he had learned not only to follow rules but to rewrite them, which is evident from his transition from bodybuilding to movies despite facing criticism.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Rewrote the Rules and Became a Hollywood Superstar
During a 2023 interview in LA to celebrate the release of his limited edition, two-volume book, the 7-time Mr. Olympia discussed the people who always tried to stop him, but he made his own rules.
Schwarzenegger said, “I always had people my whole life saying no, you can’t do that, Oh, this is impossible.
That’s why one of the other routes to success obviously is don’t listen to the naysayers. Because there’s always people around to say no, it’s impossible.”
He added, “I remember that agents and managers, studio executives, always saying to me, ‘forget it, Arnold'… forget about acting. No one has ever made it with a German accent.”
The Austrian Oak admitted that he was offered very small roles as a bouncer, but not a leading role.
But he always resisted negativity and forged his own path.
So, Schwarzenegger exemplifies determination, hard work, and persistence.
