IFBB Hall of Famer and 13-time Mr Olympia competitor Shawn Ray recently sparked debate online with his controversial opinions. An Instagram post shared by Generation Iron shares Ray’s argument on bodybuilding standards. He argues that every bodybuilder qualifying for the Olympia shouldn't automatically qualify them to compete.

The Instagram post shared on June 26 highlights an age-old, controversial topic. Ray shares his belief that modern bodybuilders should assess themselves with honesty and genuine thought.

They should introspect whether they are ready to challenge top athletes. Furthermore, he thinks that bodybuilders should spend more time and effort on improving their skills and physique.

“My positioning is this. For me, the Olympia is hallowed ground. Like, I think if you’re going to win, you’re going to at least compete,” he said. “You’re going to get paid. Okay?.. The more exclusive the Olympia is, the more people are going to want to one day walk across the stage.”

Ray made the statement while deliberating whether the Olympia stage has become too lenient.

He maintains that although it is possible for more competitors to get qualified, not all who get qualified should be allowed to compete. Furthermore, he emphasizes that Olympia should remain an exclusive event.

Ray’s remarks came soon after Quinton Eriya qualified for the 2026 Mr Olympia, which Ray did not agree with. Eriya earned a spot in the 2026 Mr Olympia by winning the Men’s Open title at the 2026 Toronto Pro Supershow.

The Olympia qualifying rules stipulate that a win at any open IFBB Pro event earns a direct entry into the Olympia.

How athletes earn an Olympia spot in 2026

Ray vehemently believes that earning a spot in the Olympia should be more than merely meeting the minimum standards and requirements. That said, the Olympia qualification system typically rewards all the top performers.

As per IFBB Pro, these are the 2026 Olympia qualification rules:

• An athlete must finish in the top three at the Mr. Olympia for automatic qualification
• An athlete must win any IFBB Pro League Men’s Open contest during the qualification period
• Any former Mr Olympia champion has lifetime eligibility
• If an athlete was a former Mr Olympia over five years ago, they must receive IFBB Pro League approval
• No points system for the Men’s Open division

This OQS (Olympia Qualification System) lasts from September 15, 2025, to August 30, 2026.

Ray’s comments and opinions continue to spark debate among fans as discussions spread about the exclusivity and standards at Olympia.
