Dorian Yates has championed six consecutive Mr. Olympia titles. Yet, those are far from the 'Shadow's most career-defining event ever.

The retired bodybuilder recently shed light on his professional debut in the 1990 Night of Champions. Posting a rare video clip of himself posing on the stage on Instagram, Yates pulled the curtain from the 36-year-old footage.

Probably the only surviving reel from the event, Yates was at a career crossroads during this competition. "Quite possibly this contest was the most important in my career," he began.

Yates shared that he'd have called it quits on competitive bodybuilding if he hadn't placed in the top 5 to focus on his "other interests".

After all, entering one of the two Olympia qualifiers, second only to the Arnold Classic, the 'Shadow' had dedicated 18 full months since he earned his pro card, polishing his shredded physique.

"I understood that there was a huge difference between a top amateur and a professional champion, so I wanted to be fully prepared for this show, and to enter the USA with my best physique," Yates wrote.

However, the Men's Open star ended up in the 2nd position, trailing right behind Momo Benaziza. Despite the loss, the event ended up inevitably changing Yates' entire career trajectory.

How Night of Champions catapulted Dorian Yates to the global stage

Even the runner-up position in this event had its own perks. Not only did Yates shock the entire industry by being the underdog that took the crown, but he also qualified for the Olympia stages.

However, the 'Shadow' waited another year to truly take the global stage by storm. I needed at least another year for the grandest stage to make a bigger impact, and in the end, it turned out to be the right choice," wrote Yates.

Moreover, beyond the attractive platform, publicity, and recognition were other upsides of participating in the contest.

In fact, bodybuilding legend Joe Weider invited Yates to LA for a shoot, which ultimately featured Yates' rowing 200 lbs on the FLEX Magazine front cover.

This success, though less dramatic than a typical overnight rags-to-riches story, propelled Yates to the top of the bodybuilding ladder. Only the next year, he won his first Mr. Olympia, a status that'd remain firmly with the 'Shadow' for six more years.
