Dorian Yates Recalls Troubling Directors and Camera Persons During Peak Bodybuilding Years: “I Wasn't Their Favorite Guy”
“Now here’s a rare shot,” Dorian Yates wrote on Instagram while revealing the interesting story behind a rare photo. While the English bodybuilding icon was on an exercise bike, he wasn't working out in this image from "1995 or ’96."
The 6x Mr. Olympia said the snapshot was from one of the shoots for Joe Weider’s bodybuilding magazines. “Now this was one of the Weider photographers, his name’s Ralph DeHaan," he wrote about the other man in the image, with his back turned to the camera.
"It was a well-known fact that I wasn’t their favourite guy to work with!” revealed Dorian Yates, and confessed that he rarely stuck to the plan.
"I wouldn’t always want to do it exactly their way. I’d do it how I wanted and felt comfortable, I remember they felt a bit panicky because Joe would direct them on how he wanted it done..." added Yates.
Now, going against Weider was something even Arnold Schwarzenegger dreaded. Arnie confessed to spending months convincing the IFBB co-founder to bring Franco Columbu to America.
However, Yates refused to compromise. "We got there in the end," he said. Yates also confessed to what Kevin Horton, who filmed Blood & Guts, said about working with him. "His answer was… 'F*** miserable!'" said the former Mr. Olympia.
Then again, this uncompromising and blunt nature is right on brand with Yates and even how he trained.
Dorian Yates only trained one way for bodybuilding
Arguably the most successful practitioner of the High Intensity Training philosophy, Dorian Yates trained heavy and to failure every time.
While exercise science has helped athletes and coaches develop many other training methods, Yates still sticks to HIT. Once again, that uncompromising nature came through in what he had to say about Reps-In-Reserve training on October 31.
"My opinion on 'reps in reserve'… Like I've said before, I only know where 0 and 100 are. Just train hard to failure. Training does NOT need to be complicated,” Yates captioned his Instagram video.
"Reps in reserve… We've got a different term for that in England. It's called a w*****'s workout. It's very technical. An English term," Dorian Yates sarcastically joked.
