Emily Blunt’s Trainer Shares Her Fitness Goals and Experience of Working With Her
8 weeks. No strict diet. One clear goal: strength. Emily Blunt has gone through several transformations in her acting career for demanding roles in various films. Each role required a different kind of workout and diet plan.
During a Men’s Health podcast with Strong Talk, Blunt’s trainer, Don Saladino, reveals her fitness goals for the role of Rita Vrataski in Edge of Tomorrow, and what it was like working with her.
Saladino recalls how Blunt came to her with a timeline of eight weeks to prepare for the role. However, he tells Ebenezer Samuel and Dr. Pat Davidson that her goals were clear and concise- she wanted to stay strong. He shares how training her for this role was straightforward, giving her enough room to enjoy an unrestricted diet.
“We don’t have to be weighing out every gram, and she can have her tequila on a Saturday night, if she wants. And there are things now, you could be more lenient with,” Saladino shared.

Although Blunt had just eight weeks to prepare, her goal was simple. She was not looking to become extremely muscular or lean; she simply wanted to build strength. This approach made it easy for Saladino to help her meet her nutrition and strength training goals.
It also ensured that Blunt was not put on an extremely strict or restrictive diet or workout plan. This gave her the breathing space to enjoy treats while still staying on track with her training and fitness goals.
Saladino worked with Blunt during 2013-2014. However, she soon switched trainers, working with Monique Eastwood during 2014 for the same role, eventually becoming her long-term trainer.
The fitness philosophy behind Emily Blunt’s training for strength, not looks
Eastwood has been working with Blunt for 12 years now, helping her with both personal and professional goals. The celebrity trainer has developed a discipline called the ‘Eastwood Movement Method,’ which is highly effective for most.
During an interview with Cosmopolitan UK, Blunt shares her experience of training with Eastwood.
"I run to my emboldening sessions with Monique – she’s become completely essential to centring my day and feeling inspired! The readiness she gives me and my body for taking on any role, whether it's horseback riding or stunts or fight scenes, has been invaluable because her workouts are so performance-based, rather than being body-conscious."
Blunt’s workouts, designed by Eastwood, involve multi-directional movements and are primarily dance-inspired. These movements engage the muscles and improve coordination, while working on the mind-body connection.
The Eastwood Movement Method is a brilliant combination of Pilates, strength training, yoga, and dance- all of which are Blunt’s favorites.
Furthermore, Blunt’s Reformer Pilates machine is her go-to method of getting a quick workout done.
