English Golfer Charley Hull Reveals Why Running Helps Her Golf Game
Ranked No. 5 on the Rolex Rankings, Charley Hull is one of the most recognized faces in women's golf. The secret behind that is not some crazy fitness gimmick; it's running.
The British golfer posted a T2 finish at the US Women's Open last month, scoring 7-under. Speaking with Spencer Matthews, Hull finally lifted the veil on what has consistently kept her at the top of the sport.
"I feel like my golf swing and my body are just moving way better," Hull shared with the Untapped podcast. "I've noticed my recovery process, because I'm a lot fitter, is so much quicker."
Besides improved mobility and blood circulation, the exercise also greatly contributes to stamina. In fact, forget flight hangovers. Hull admitted that even hopping off a plane barely drains her.
While running might not be everyone's darling, there's no denying the importance of sustained energy in golf, where the crucial holes often come later in the tournament.
As the 30-year-old golfer explained, "after a couple of weeks' stretch, I feel a lot more like it's the first day still," even on Sundays of her tournaments.
However, the more under-appreciated facet of running is the mental aspect. Fortunately, Hull did not brush past the fact when she revealed that a quick morning run often brightens her mood, an energy she carries into the golf course, too.
"I come back, and I'm like buzzing, like bubbly, bouncing." That obsession with running is nothing new for the golfer.
Charley Hull squeezed in a running session despite being under the weather
The British golfer is renowned for her early morning, or rather, graveyard running sessions. She consistently gets her runs even on tournament days. This dedication once led her down a tricky path.
In last year's HSBC Women’s World Championship, where she ultimately ranked T4, Hull ran her personal-best time right before the third round, covering 5k in 26 minutes.
While that feat on competition day in and of itself is impressive, what takes it up a notch is the fact that Hull wasn't feeling her best that day.
“I woke up this morning, and I actually was sick. I threw up, and then I kind of got my head together. Then I actually did my personal best in my 5K run in 26 minutes," Hull told Golf Digest.
Deciding to complete her run even while sick was definitely a risky choice, but one that paid off well. So, what are your thoughts on Charley Hull's morning run ritual?
