5 NBA Players who had most intense training routines in basketball history

A basketball player needs a mix of endurance, court agility, and explosive power. The physical demands of the sport are highly specific, requiring athletes to jump, absorb impact, and sprint continuously.

In NBA history, the stars with the most intense training approach are those who redefined the legendary process through preparation and obsession.

From LeBron James to Dwyane Wade, the list is long, but here are 5 NBA players who created history with their record-breaking game and fitness, as first published by Bleacher Report.

Dwyane Wade

During his NBA career, Wade focused on intense training and physical conditioning. He often followed a routine tailored by performance coach Tim Grover, as per the Bleacher Report article.

From 2003 to 2019, Wade posted a career win-loss record of 611-443 in the regular season and 105-72 in the playoffs. This type of performance was possible due to his physical strength, for which Wade trained hard.

After Kelley Stump from Men’s Health went for a workout with Wade, he wrote this after the session:

“It’s clear that we weren’t cut out to move at Wade’s pace, and I’m now certain his workout regimen is no joke.”

LeBron James

For many years, James has ruled the NBA world, and he knew that to be one of the best basketball players in the world, he needed to train differently.

Speaking on his Mind The Game podcast, James once talked about his routine when he stayed super locked in.

“When I'm super locked in, I'm in there five days a week, Monday through Friday. Saturday is a recovery day where I do absolutely nothing," James said. "Sunday is more of a get the body work done, get my mind ready for the long week again."

James has always looked like a superhuman on the basketball court. Lakers nutritionist Dr. Cate Shanahan recently made a statement, saying if he cuts back on sugar and gets leaner, LeBron “will be a monster.”

Blake Griffin

6-time NBA All-Star Griffin has been open about his intense training, which has evolved over his career to manage physical wear and tear. During his peak, he was dedicated to high-performance training and a healthy lifestyle.

In an episode of Bulletproof Radio, Griffin said, “I just naturally enjoy healthy things…. And I think some people don’t believe that that’s a possibility. But I actually do, and I’ve always had this interest in it.”

Apart from that, in 2011, Neil Janowitz from Men's Health wrote, “While waiting for the squabble to end, Griffin supplemented his shooting drills with an hour of yoga 3 days a week, heading off to the gym afterward for a workout. In a standard off-season week, he does an hour of strength and conditioning work 3 to 5 days a week”.

Derrick Rose

Rose has seen many highs and lows in his career. However, his consistent training approach and hard work enabled him to sustain his NBA career from 2008 to 2024.

He has spent the last couple of seasons trying to recover from devastating knee injuries.

Even during his 2012 recovery, Adidas filmed Rose’s rehabilitation journey and showed his fans how much work it took to get back to the court.

His weightlifting routine includes exercises such as RDLs, heavy deadlifts, and rack pulls.

Kobe Bryant

Bryant is another name on the list whose workout routine is tagged as fanatical by Bleacher Report's Kevin Ding. Bryant also earned the nickname Black Mamba due to his no-quit approach.

To understand how hard Bryant's exercise is, it is important to look at ex-Lakers head coach Phil Jackson's statement when the New York Post asked him, “Is Kobe Bryant the model for Carmelo Anthony?”

In response, he said, “No. No one can approach that. I don't expect anybody to be able to model their behavior after that, although Kobe modeled his behavior a lot on Michael Jordan, but he went beyond Michael in his attitude towards training, and I know Mike would probably question me saying that, but he did”.

So, from James to Rose, they have all maintained their physiques through intense workouts and hard work.
