5 Tallest ECW Champions in wrestling history
Height is a pivotal factor when it comes to physical sports, especially wrestling. And in ECW, which stood as a brand full of intense, extreme matches, height can change the game.
ECW had a very niche audience and eventually closed its doors in 2001. Although it was revived by WWE from 2006 to 2010, fans argue that it lost its former charm.
But real fans know that ECW was not just about brutal matches but also their champions. From some of the shortest to some of the tallest men in the world of wrestling, ECW has seen a variety of body types conquer the championship crown.
Here is a list of the five tallest men to have won the ECW Championship, per Sportster.
Mike Awesome: 6'6"
Per Sportster, towering at 6'6", Mike Awesome was the tallest ECW World Heavyweight Champion, hailing from the original ECW era. His dominance was a combination of his incredible size and his astonishing athleticism.
By far, he was one of the most dominant champions of the promotion and is remembered for his intimidating persona even today.
Awesome won his first ECW World Heavyweight Championship in 1998 when he defeated reigning champion Taz and Masato Tanaka.
Bam Bam Bigelow: 6'4''
Impossible to miss, Bam Bam Bigelow boasted of a colossal frame, standing at 6'4" and his signature flame tattoo on his head. However, despite his massive frame, he was extremely agile and fast compared to many smaller wrestlers.
He won the ECW World Heavyweight Championship in 1997 after defeating Shane Douglas.
The Sandman: 6'3"
At 6'3", The Sandman was one of the tallest ECW champions and a fan-favorite. His unique gimmicks, like the kendo stick-wielding, made him a fan-favorite for years, all the way from 1995 to 2001.
He was known for capturing the ECW Championship five times, setting his legacy in stone.
Steve Corino: 6'3"
A regular wrestling giant, Steve Corino, stood at 6’3”, one of the tallest ECW champions. However, his lean frame masked his height and was unhelpful in giving him the upper hand when wrestling with larger opponents.
He captured the ECW World Heavyweight Championship in 2000 after defeating Justin Credible and Jerry Lynn in a double jeopardy match.
Tommy Dreamer: 6'2"
At 6'2", Tommy Dreamer was one of the most respected ECW champions. Fans appreciated his tough attitude, praising him for having a ‘never-give-up' mindset.
After years of chasing the ECW World Heavyweight Championship, he finally won it in 2000 by defeating Taz.
From hardcore legends to behemoths, these ECW champions matched their tremendous sizes to their skills.
