How 47-year-old Christine Lampard Stays Fit Without the Gym

Christine Lampard keeps her fitness routine simple and surprisingly gym-free, and here is why.

Instead of following a strict gym regimen, the Loose Women host maintains a fit body by following an approach based on consistency, convenience, and low-pressure movement. Speaking to Women's Health magazine about her routine, she revealed how everyday activities keep her active and maintain her energy levels.

‘I don't go to the gym, but I'm always moving, and I think that keeps me fit. Frank is very good with gym stuff, but I find that general activeness and not sitting around for too long is pretty good for me. I was up at 5.45 this morning preparing breakfast, making lunches, and getting the kids ready.”

She further revealed that her day-to-day activities contribute to her fitness.

“I walked my daughter to school while she rode along on her little scooter, and then I took our dog out. I'm also active around the house, and it gets my steps up without trying.’

So if no gyms are involved, how is she so fit? The reason is Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT). It is any movement that is completely impromptu. For Lampard, these movements include walking, which forms a key part of her routine.

Lampard explained that although she has thought about joining a Pilates class for over 20 years, she has never found the time or encouragement to do so. So gymming and traditional exercises are out of the question for her.

Walking with her children and pets seems like a much more viable and comfortable option. In fact, she is so dedicated to her routine that no matter the weather, she doesn't quit for anything.

What is NEAT?

NEAT, or Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, simply means burning calories through everyday activities and not through gym exercises. For example, walking in your house, doing household chores, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, cooking, etc.

In short, any physical activity that isn’t done in a gym is a NEAT exercise. It might seem less effective than a gym, but these small chores make a huge difference in burning calories. In fact, about 25-30% of all calories burned daily come from NEAT.

Here are some examples of what constitutes NEAT:

  • Taking the stairs
  • Walking your dog
  • Carry grocery shopping from the car to your home
  • Washing your car
  • Random fidgeting
  • Playing with your children or pets
  • Using a standing desk
  • Walking to every short distance instead of taking public or private transport
  • Gardening
