Currently training under the guidance of the Cofounder of Reebok CrossFit Lab, Ron Mathews, Joe Manganiello often describes his workouts as “being in the pain cave.” He deadlifts 225-pound deadlifts for sets up to 10, 300-pound deadlifts for sets of four. Here’s how Mathews trains him:
- Barbell Deadlift: 6 sets — 10, 8, 6, 4, 4, 2
- Toes to Bar: 6 sets — 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8
- Sled Pull: 40 yards
- Jump Squat: 5 reps
- Burpee Box Jump-Overs: 8 (odd minutes)
- Barbell Front Squat: 8 (even minutes)
According to Men's Journal, his back workout routine looks something like this:
- Back Squat 3 x 5 reps
- Hack Squat 3 x 12 reps
- Bulgarian Split Squat 3 x 10 reps each side
- Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift 3 x 10 reps
- Leg Extension Machine 3 x 12 reps
- Jump Squat 3 x 12 reps

All of those heavy workouts require a proper, nutrition-rich diet that includes proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and other essential nutrients. According to CoachWeb.com, his diet includes:
Meal 1: No-added-sugar protein bar
Meal 2: Post-workout protein shake
Meal 3: (About 1 hour after post-workout shake)
- Egg whites,
- ham & cheese omelette,
- Bacon or sausage,
- Vegetables
- Cup of coffee
Meal 4: Grilled organic chicken breast with vegetable stir-fry
- Olive oil, red pepper, green beans, capers, cherry tomatoes, olives, spinach
- Drizzled with balsamic vinegar
Meal 5: Large fillet steak with steamed broccoli and cauliflower
