How Melissa McCarthy’s Diet Helped Her Lose 70 Lbs Within 4 Months

Melissa McCarthy’s weight loss story has sparked curiosity among people. The Mike & Molly star lost 70 pounds, but that journey wasn't simple.

McCarthy underwent a noticeable transformation over the years, and her approach has been practical. Instead of following strict diet plans or drastic measures, she built healthier habits.

During an appearance on Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club in May 2018, she talked about her approach.

"I think everybody’s always kind of working on something. And I was like, ‘If I can de-stress and just do it slower and stop constantly trying to be on something.’ And then it actually worked better instead of being like, ‘I’m gonna not do this and do this and only drink this,’" Melissa McCarthy said.

Firstly, Melissa McCarthy got comfortable with the fact that the weighing scale is always fluctuating, and she learned to roll with it.

"I was like, ‘I’m just gonna mellow out, give myself a break,’" she added.

Secondly, instead of surrendering to the beauty standards set by society, she found self-acceptance.

Thirdly, after trying a doctor-supervised all-liquid diet, which resulted in her losing 70 lbs in four months in 2003, she realized that she would never do it again.

Despite positive results, the physical and mental toll it took on her wasn't worth it.

McCarthy also credits motherhood for changing her views on body image.

"It was the first time I ate something and didn’t give it a second thought. If I wanted a piece of toast, I’d have one. It felt magical," McCarthy said about her first pregnancy.

But McCarthy has also shared how difficult it is to navigate a career when the people around you look at you with prejudice.

"When I go shopping, most of the time I’m disappointed. Two Oscars ago, I couldn’t find anybody to do a dress for me. I asked five or six designers — very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people — and they all said no," she said in a 2014 Redbook interview.

Melissa McCarthy’s Training and Diet Regimen

Hollywood Life reported that McCarthy works out at least five days a week, and her training routine is mostly cardio and weight training.

“Melissa has so much more energy that it’s crazy. She’s constantly on the go and she finds herself actually looking forward to working out now, which is something she never thought she would do,” a close source told HollywoodLife.

The Gilmore Girls star follows the Keto diet, and it has apparently suited her since she never feels like she’s starving. She is eating clean, and her diet is high in protein and low in carbs.

She doesn't eat processed foods, chips or sugary items, and has replaced them with nuts and seasoned veggies.
