How pool workouts and a vegan diet helped transform Jaylen Brown
Best known for his elite two-way play, NBA star Jaylen Brown shared the secret behind his transformation. Unlike what people may assume, the philosophy behind his off-season workout and new diet is simple.
On August 18, 2024, the Boston Celtics guard posted a set of pictures of himself working out underwater. From dribbling a basketball in one hand with a 40-pound dumbbell in the other to posing upside down with two dumbbells for support, his pool workout looked intimidating to most.
The X post was captioned, “Take this pic before I drown.”
As per an interview with Boston.com on June 24, 2024, Brown admits how pool workouts have changed his workout regimen.
“The more I’ve embedded myself in water, the more I’ve seen my body transform in the last couple of years,” Brown said. “I’ve just gotten more athletic, I’ve gotten faster, I’ve gotten bigger and stronger, and I credit it a lot to improving my relationships with the water.”
In the same interview, he credits his vegan diet with changing his life. He admitted to having a clearer mind, more focus, and more agility after turning vegan at 24.
“My thoughts were clear. My life changed in a sense. Now, I mix vegan practices with my own dietary needs to do what I need to do, but at the time when I was vegan, nothing did I appreciate more than the clear thoughts, the clarity,” he said.
Brown’s training is a mix of pool workouts and heavy strength training. He also adds martial arts practices, helping him stay at the top of his game.
Inside the training regimen of Jaylen Brown
While Brown has been vocal about how pool workouts have affected his fitness regimen, he also credits Muay Thai with his athleticism.
According to an interview on November 21, 2024, with Ebenezer Samuel on Men’s Health, Brown began his Muay Thai journey in 2023. Soon after the Celtics’ surprising loss to the Miami Heat in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, Brown decided to train with coach Lionel Young thrice a week during the offseason.
This drastically improved his footwork, conditioning, and mobility. Now, he throws quick punches and roundhouse kicks effortlessly.
“I’ve seen my body get challenged in new ways that normal training can’t do,” Brown said. “I think I’m moving towards my prime. I’m starting to move more into my masculinity, more into, like, my physique. My body is priming. Nothing else can really throw me off outside of that.”
A combination of smart training and nutrition has helped Brown stay at the top of his game. Have you ever attempted pool workouts, and if so, what kind?
