How Ray Bertka Lost 100 Lbs Without a Gym in Less Than a Year
The weight loss and transformation of an individual generally involve hours of sweating in the gym. But the 35-year-old CEO of Club1, Ray Bertka, challenged this norm by shedding a startling 100 lbs without even stepping into a gym for a single day.
Bertka spoke to Lisa Mulachy from Men's Health on February 6, where he revealed how his weight gradually reached an alarming point, as he clocked 303 lbs on the scale. And hence, the Hartville, Ohio, native sprung into action and achieved this rare feat with a push from his wife.
While Bertka completed his 100 lbs transformation without a gym, it probably wouldn't have been possible without his wife, a registered and licensed dietitian. It was Bertka's wife who advised him to follow the Whole30 diet plan, which ultimately resulted in a 100 lbs drop in his weight in just 11 months.
Bertka went into further details of the Whole30 plan and said, "Whole30 is a 30-day nutrition reset that focuses on eating real, whole foods while temporarily removing things like added sugar, a******, grains, dairy, and heavily processed foods."
The Club1 CEO started following the plan to gain an understanding of how different foods affected his body. However, the common side effect of the Whole30 plan, weight loss, acted as an added benefit, which finally led to his startling transformation.
He learned about the functions of the three major macronutrients, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, which gradually made his diet more macro-focused rather than portion-size focused. With a daily intake of between 1,850 and 2,100 calories, Bretka also spread the intake of macronutrients evenly throughout the day, leading him to the 100 lbs transformation.
But while all this happened without visiting the gym, Bretka eventually had to visit one following another startling discovery.
Ray Bertka's medical condition led him to join a gym
While speaking to Men's Health, Bertka also revealed that his weight loss did little to uplift him mentally. He confessed, "Despite the weight loss, I continued to feel off. I still dealt with what I thought were anxiety and panic episodes, and continued to write them off as stress."
Bertka's condition propelled him to get a blood test, which revealed that he had Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition that affects the thyroid and blood sugar levels. His doctor mentioned that his health could improve through exercise, probiotics, and the intake of targeted vitamins and minerals, instead of going for medication.
This became Bretka's ultimate motivation as he began making more movement, like walking across the golf course instead of using a cart, and more. But after making this change, he couldn't stop himself from joining a gym.
Talking about the primary reasons behind this move, the 35-year-old said, "I wanted to go through a body recomposition and rebuild the muscle I likely lost during the 100-pound weight loss journey. Most importantly, I wanted to support my thyroid health and feel confident in my body. I wanted to look fit for my wife and set a strong example for my daughter."
After beginning with four days of light-weight training, Bertka gradually shifted to progressive overloading with an increase in his consistency. He also started a reverse diet, the process of slowly increasing calories over time after being in a deficit.
All this helped him put his Hashimoto's disease in the back foot, while his mental state also improved significantly.
