Jeremy Allen White’s diet and workout to build muscle for 'The Iron Claw'

Most people remember Jeremy Allen White playing Kerry Von Erich in the legendary 2023 wrestling biopic. However, while most people admired his muscular physique, few understood the effort and work that went into it.

Following intense weight-training sessions, White packed on a whopping 40 pounds of muscle to portray Kerry Von Erich. This called for a massive daily calorie intake, especially protein, intense weightlifting, and a short break from cardio. White admitted to finding the process challenging, saying it was “no way to live.”

Kerry Von Erich was known for his powerful physique during his wrestling career, making the transformation a key part of White's preparation for the role.

According to Generation Iron, White revealed to Esquire how he was required to eat constantly, which was the hardest part.

“Eating all the time. Like, never stopping,” he said.

“I knew I had to lift heavy things, so I lifted heavy things,” he said with a chuckle on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

White has also been vocal about enjoying cardio exercises like cycling, hiking, running, and skipping, all of which he had to temporarily sacrifice, according to Generation Iron.

After his major bulking phase, White finally shed the extra pounds and muscle to return to the lean physique most fans recognize today.

How Jeremy Allen White rebuilt his physique for The Bear

After packing on muscle for his earlier role, White had to slim down again for his leading role as chef Carmy Berzatto in The Bear. With Season 5 of the series set to release on June 25, fans gush over his lean, athletic appearance and extraordinary acting skills.

After a long wait, White finally got back to his old routine, which he loved: biking, running, hiking, and strength training.

As per GQ magazine, White engaged in a very specific training routine for his role as Chef Carmy. This included:

  • EZ bar bench with a 5kg dumbbell (wrist and forearms)
  • Customized games to improve hand-eye coordination and reflexes
  • Strength training for the core, back, and shoulders
  • Sprinting
  • Boxing

White’s dedication to his roles is evident, whether it is bulking up for The Iron Claw or getting lean for The Bear.

Let us know in the comments which of White’s physiques you prefer: the muscular athlete or the chef’s lean build.
