LTG Chris Mohan and Robert Irvine Redefine U.S. Army Meal Standards

The US Army is changing the nutrition equation. And Lieutenant General of the Army Materiel Command (AMC), Chris Mohan, is leading that movement.

Throughout his nearly 40-year career, Mohan has experienced Army food firsthand. And for a country with one of the strongest military presences, the diet remained a weaker, often overlooked issue.

With the Army’s shift to the Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) system in 2018, America prioritized the soldiers’ optimal performance over 5 domains: physical, mental, spiritual, sleep, and nutrition. Mohan, however, doubled down on nutrition as the foundation for a strong army.

The AMC Commanding General found that the meals provided to the people in uniform failed to meet the standards the country set. More than the plate, the environment was also setting a negative precedent.

“Our Soldiers were telling us, ‘Hey, look, this is not working.’ And it became something we were really concerned about from a recruiting and retention standpoint,” Mohan remarked, becoming a voice for the army parading the US emblem.

Collaborating with Food Network star Robert Irvine, Mohan landed a contract with Compass Group to serve nutritious meals to the soldiers and their families. In fact, Irvine even studied university dining halls to perfect proper chairs, tables, and lighting.

And the strategy is already leading massive changes in the army’s nutrition.

Criticisms and frustrations over food quality have quickly turned into positive feedback. And more than the reviews, the dining hall has fed over 4000 soldiers on a payday weekend, “which is unheard of”.

This is a massive victory, as per the numbers, which reported just over 200 meals in the past. Moreover, the food is also affordable and conveniently available within the base itself.

Speaking of the experience, Irvine gets the bragging rights. “They go on their phones, and they take pictures. We saw kids, little kids running in there and eating and finding things, and the campus-style dining is an amazing thing. And the Soldiers love it. They don’t just like it, they love it.”

This movement, led by some of the Army’s most loyal members, is setting a strong paradigm of Army nutrition for years to come.
