Mel Rodriguez Details the Transformation Phase From Once Weighing 420 Lbs

After the scale climbed to 420lbs, the American actor and comedian Mel Rodriguez decided it was time for a change, and that mindset led The Last Man on Earth actor on an inspiring weight-loss journey.
On March 4, Rodriguez appeared in a video of the TRAIN LIKE series on the Men’s Health YouTube channel, which featured the exercises in his training regimen. In the video, he revealed that he started to train after his doctor asked him to lose weight continuously whenever he visited him.
Rodriguez recalled the time when he turned 47 and started “thinking it's too late” for a transformation. But at that time, he knew that when he didn’t want “to do something” or was scared to do something, “that’s probably exactly what” he needed to do.
Rodriguez began his transformation journey by “walking around the block a couple of times.” Over time, he started to see real results, and now he walks “about 3-4 miles every day.”
Apart from walking, he included a calisthenics-based workout, which he liked to perform in his teenage years.
And the reason behind choosing this was simple, as he revealed, “It doesn’t give me any excuses. I spend a lot of time on set, I’m in my trailer, or I’m out of town, and this is something I can do anywhere.”
In the video, the Better Call Saul actor was seen doing a full-body workout, which includes:
- Treadmill walking for 30 minutes
- 15 reps of wide-push-ups
- Plank for 30 seconds
- 15 reps of regular push-ups
- Again, plank for 30 seconds
- Diamond pushups (10-15 reps)
- Arm Circles (100 backwards and 100 forwards)
- Isometric curls (50 reps each side)
- Body-weight squats (till failure)
- Calf-raises (till failure)
- Shoulder shrugs (till failure)
However, Rodriguez’s transformation does not depend solely on his workouts; his dietary habits also play a vital role.
Mel Rodriguez’s Diet
On November 3, 2025, Rodriguez shared a descriptive post on Instagram about his transformation journey and diet. He started with, “6 years ago, I made a decision to change my life.”
The 52-year-old continued, “I've addressed my diet and become more conscious and accountable for what I put in my body. We are gifted with just one.” He further revealed that he “removed sugar and bread” from his diet.
Apart from that, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, he called himself “an emotional eater.” Despite sticking to a structured diet, he also keeps his cheat day on Saturday.
So, Rodriguez's approach to losing weight looks simple: start slow, train consistently, and eat healthy, with minimal cheats. Are you also thinking of following this approach?
