Mike O’Hearn Discusses Training Mindset With Arnold Schwarzenegger
Four-time Mr. Universe-winning bodybuilder Mike O’Hearn has enjoyed a decades-long connection with legend Arnold Schwarzenegger. From the early stages of his career, O’Hearn has trained with Schwarzenegger, gaining valuable tips and training philosophies from the latter.
He highlights his journey with various bodybuilders over the past four decades. He shares how he had a special relationship with icons like Frank Zane, Lou Ferrigno, and, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The biggest lesson he learned was the power of discipline, consistency, and proven fundamentals, rather than chasing shortcuts.
“Understand the mindset that made them great. Then spend decades putting those lessons to the test myself. Today, much of that knowledge is disappearing, and many of the lessons that created generations of champions are being replaced by trends, shortcuts, and opinions by self-proclaimed social media experts.”
O’Hearn emphasizes the fact that the best athletes have always remained open-minded and grounded while having a constant curiosity for knowledge.
Moreover, they understand that learning is a continuous, lifelong process, and not something you should replace with shortcuts.
When asked about his goal, what O’Hearn says is simple and beautiful. O’Hearn wants to ensure that the next generation always has access to the guidance, wisdom, principles, and standards set by these icons.
He also talks about the importance of being selective with learning. Just like most people are careful about what they consume in terms of food, it’s important to use the same concept with who you learn from.
When Mike O’Hearn Trained Alongside Frank Zane
In a recent video that surfaced on Mike O’Hearn’s Instagram, he is seen training alongside American bodybuilder and three-time Mr. Olympia Frank Zane. In the video, O’Hearn is performing dumbbell pullovers.
Zane comments, “Great exercise. Nobody does that. I never saw anybody doing these at Gold’s Gym, where I trained. Nobody except me.”
To this, O’Hearn says, “You’re almost 80, and an exercise like that, if it’s performed today, you know what they would say? Ooh, you do that once, you’re gonna hurt yourself.”
O’Hearn reflects how people nowadays don’t focus on building sustainable power that lasts a lifetime. Instead, they merely chase gains and aesthetics.
On hearing this, Zane laughs and says, “Maybe they would!” Looks like Zane shares the same opinion as O’Hearn on the matter. However, Zane, who belonged to the Golden Era of bodybuilding, had a completely different mindset and training philosophy that has helped him stay strong even in his 80s.
O’Hearn’s session was a quiet reminder to everyone- timeless training principles from legends are more important than modern fads.
Do you agree with O’Hearn and think that the best teachers come from the Golden Era? Let us know your opinions in the comments.
