Ronda Rousey Shares Insights From Judo Training and Workouts Ahead of Gina Carano Fight
Ronda Rousey will be facing off against Gina Carano on May 16, and the preparation has already begun. A few days ago, Carano gave an update on her training. Now it's time to see what Rousey has included in her training.
Just five days left for the biggest MMA showdown of the year, and Rousey sat down with Netflix Sports to give an update on her Judo training. It looks like even a decade of retirement could not dampen the Queen of Judo's skills.
"I have, like, a really unique style of Judo," she said, talking about her judo skills on May 6. "Gripping and all that, and fighting for position is something that I was the best at in judo ever. They try to get you up so quickly in judo, so I had to be transitioning into my submission already on the way to the ground. Which is why my submissions are so fast. It's why I work so quickly."
Although trained in judo, Rousey later transitioned to MMA in 2010 as an amateur fighter. In 2011, she made her official pro MMA debut at King of the Cage: Turning Point.
Judo became a gateway to a much bigger platform that awaited her. She later became a pioneering figure in the world of MMA and one of the best female UFC fighters of all time.
Judo is her basic discipline and makes up for most of her fighting style, but MMA has allowed her to explore more range in fighting.
The former UFC champion is going up against a Muay Thai champion, who is known for her strength and blows. Carano is taller and heavier, but Rousey seems determined to defeat her.
"I'm hyped for it, because the way that she strikes at a distance, and close, and on the ground, she's deadly everywhere," she said. "When she goes down, she knows how to get up, and she's not f****** getting up."
Rousey now follows a specific training routine for the big day.
Ronda Rousey’s Training Routine for the May 16 Fight
In a recent YouTube video shared by Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), fans got a little sneak peek into what goes on inside the training camp of a UFC champion.
She is being trained by Ricky Lundell, and her training involves everything from cardio to striking and judo-based submission grappling, especially her signature, the armbar.
After training, her recovery included everything from the sauna to the ice bath and the hyperbaric chamber sessions. Lundell also shared a lighthearted memory about when Ronda Rousey first called him seeking coaching guidance.
"She started really thinking about Gina, and she called me right after having her baby, and I knew right then. She goes, "Hey." And I just said, "Who we fighting?" And she laughed. She said, "I want to fight Gina." And I was like, "Well, let's do it," recalled Lundell.
So, it has been a goal for Rousey to face off against Carano.
