Ronnie Coleman Explains His Joy Of Having an Entire Gym To Himself From Prime Workout Years
8-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman often shares stories and glimpses from his bodybuilding days that motivate many fans and new fitness enthusiasts.
On June 26, Coleman shared one such moment from his competition days on his Instagram. He captioned the post, “There's no better feeling than having the entire gym to yourself!! Time to make some gains and lift that weight, baby!!!”
His legendary workout took place at MetroFlex Gym in Fort Worth, Texas. Because Coleman often trained at odd hours and early, an empty floor meant no waiting for his turn or the machines, and the freedom to focus on his famous Yeah Buddy mindset.
During his peak days, Coleman’s workouts were shaped by Brian Dobson’s approach. Dobson, the owner of the Metro Flex gym, motivated Coleman to focus on basic movements with heavy weight, followed by concentrated work with lighter loads.
However, as Coleman's strength increased, the gym had to adapt. There was a time when Dobson ordered 200-lb dumbbells specifically for the King.
Coleman regularly followed his workout routine, leg-pressing more than 2000 lbs, and he once even demonstrated intense strength by deadlifting 800 lbs.
What was the intense workout routine Coleman used to follow at the gym?

His workout split looked like:
- Monday: Chest and triceps
- Tuesday: Back
- Wednesday: Shoulders
- Thursday: Back again, trained twice weekly for width and thickness
- Friday: Legs
- Saturday: Arms and shoulders
- Sunday: Rest.
According to the article, it was leg day sessions that defined Coleman's career. Coleman's leg training approach became famous in the world of bodybuilding.
His leg training routine used to be as follows:
- Squats: 6 sets, pyramiding with 800 lbs
- Leg presses: 5 sets of more than 2000 lbs weight
- Hack squats: 4 sets
- Stiff-leg deadlifts: 4 sets
So, Coleman became happy to see an empty gym because it gave him more space to work out and more time.
