Steven Adams Talks about Training Sessions with Sister Valerie Adams
Known for his strength and agility, NBA center Steven Adams recently had a workout session with his older half-sister, Valerie Adams. Valerie, who is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, stunned Steven during their training session, inspiring her younger brother.
During the Between the Beers podcast, Steven reflects on his first impression when training with Valerie. Her workout style and strength were impressive enough for the NBA athlete to call her an “animal,” as Valerie was seen warming up with his max bench press.
“She is like, by far, the most disciplined person I’ve ever come across. Like, she’s very ‘to the tee’.”
Steven doesn’t shy away from admitting how impressive her sense of discipline is. He laughs as he recollects how she has a specific, fixed time that she spends on her phone- just seven minutes!
He also talks about how she maintains a personal diary, which she uses to hold herself accountable. The diary included specific items like when she needed to have a protein shake, how long she would have as free time, etc.
This, Steven reflects, is what makes her the best in what she does. It’s about being answerable to yourself- a key mindset that divides the ordinary from the extraordinary. Moreover, he attributes her dedication and discipline to the guidance provided by her coach, Jean-Pierre Egger. According to Steven, their “intense” training sessions are a wonder to watch.
Valerie Adams, The Olympic Champion Who Inspired Steven Adams
As Steven put it, it takes “intense” training under an excellent coach to get to Valerie’s standards. According to an interview with Jean-Pierre Egger with HMMR Media, Valerie’s focus is on explosive power, technical precision, and consistency.
As a shot-put champion, Valerie emphasizes balance, movement quality, and timing. She practices drills such as non-reverse throws, strength training with medicine balls, and dynamic warm-up and mobility work.
It is also important for her to focus on her lower body and core strength workouts. This gives her the strength, balance, and stability to perform world-class throws that bring home the gold medals.
One of the most important aspects of her training, however, was technical feedback and recovery. Coach Egger is extremely proactive, ensuring to look after Valerie’s welfare first. This became a central part of their partnership, enabling Valerie to compete at such an elite level.
It is clear why Steven holds Valerie in such high regard, having immense respect for her discipline and power.
