Wesley Vissers explains the benefits of the sissy hack squat

Dutch IFBB Pro bodybuilder, Wesley Vissers, often takes to Instagram to post workout videos and enlightening fitness content. He recently delved into the topic of sissy hack squats and how he feels that they are a game-changing exercise that everyone should try.

Vissers posted an Instagram video of himself performing the sissy hack squat on June 27. Performed on a hack squat machine, this exercise is an excellent stretch for the quads, hips, and ankles. Moreover, a higher range of mobility allows Vissers to develop more muscle.

“Many people were surprised to see me do these the other day. It's called the sissy hack squat and might be one of the most underrated movements for bodybuilding 🤷🏻‍♂️,” Vissers captioned the video.

Further mentioning the merits of the exercise, he stated:

“Not only does it stretch the quads all the way to the top, it also stretches the hips and ankles at the same time. And those are exactly the key points where people lack mobility to achieve a better range of motion during their squats and leg presses.”

He emphasizes the importance of performing this one simple exercise before any leg workouts or squats. The stretching movement not only gives you more mobility but also ensures deeper movements for a better workout.

This improved ankle/hip mobility translates to deeper squats and better quad activation

After performing the incredible sissy hack squat, Vissers follows an intense leg workout routine designed to help him build strong, aesthetic legs.

A look into Wesley Vissers’ custom leg workout routine

Vissers once decided to skip the 2025 competitive season to work on improving his legs and make massive gains. Following a strict leg workout routine, he was able to ramp up his leg volume by a whopping 50%.

According to an article posted on Barbend on July 7, 2025, Vissers took time off to rethink and recalibrate his leg workouts. After a lot of research and trial and error, he designed a workout that consisted of-

  • Lying hamstring curls
  • Belt squats
  • Machine hack squats
  • Nordic curls
  • Machine adductors
  • Dumbbell lunges

Furthermore, Vissers focused on certain advanced techniques with the help of his coach, Kienzl. He not only wore high-heeled weightlifting shoes during squats but also engaged in advanced techniques like FST-7 or Fascial Stretch Training.

“Be intelligent and enjoy your workout for much longer with more aesthetic results,” Vissers advised.

Vissers’ advice proves that it’s not the volume and intensity of the workouts that make a difference, but smart training with adequate stretches.
