Alexander Volkanovski's Workout: How The UFC Champion Trains For Peak Performance

Jan 31, 2026, 7:58 PM CUT

Alexander Volkanovski's UFC journey has been one for the books, and the entire credit for his rise as a champion goes to his relentless training and discipline.

You may know Volk as a former UFC featherweight champion, with one of the longest undefeated streaks (12). But before all the fame and glory, he was a young Aussie guy with a bulging disk and sciatica whose back issues were leading him towards a wheelchair-ridden future.

But with his determination, training, and help from the BiaMed Performance Centre, which fixed his back, improved his hip mobility, and made his legs strong enough to take a significant load off his back.

Ahead of Alexander Volkanovski's fight with Diego Lopes, let's take a look at what he's doing to add another victory to his record.

Everything Alexander Volkanovski does for peak performance

Training camp

The Great trains under Joe Lopes at Freestyle Fighting Gym in Windang, Australia.

Volkanovski believes that consistency and hard work always outweigh mere talent. Some of the best coaches design Alex's training camp, which runs around three MMA activities: striking, grappling, and Jiu-Jitsu.

Two sessions per day/5 days a week, is what keeps him ready for the ring. The morning is for MMA training, whereas the afternoon is reserved for core and cardio workouts.

MMA:

  • Muay Thai
  • Heavy bag striking
  • Takedown and basic wrestling
  • High-intensity drills
  • Wrestling

Core & Cardio:

  • Interval cardio - hill sprints, stair sprints, running, rowing, and assault bike, heavy bag work, pylometric movements
  • Core - planks, Russian twists, hanging leg raises, mountain climb

Strength & Weight:

Depending on which time of training he is in, Alex raises the intensity of the workout.

  • During early camp
  • Nearing the fight

Conditioning:

  • Kettlebell swings
  • Sandbag drags
  • Rope work

The Meat Grinder

It is an intense MMA training technique where Alex faces a different opponent every 30 seconds. It runs for five rounds, and the aim is to replicate the mayhem of a real fight.

Spyda session

As the fight approaches, to reduce the risk of injury, Alex goes through some technical drills to sharpen his reflexes.
