Arnold Schwarzenegger on Why Training Is as Natural as Breakfast and Sleep
Supported by the guidance of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
Arnold Schwarzenegger recently explained his lifelong training philosophy to Logan Paul. The bodybuilding legend compared his daily workouts to eating breakfast and sleeping, calling them a non-negotiable part of his life.
And the reason? Let's hear from the legend himself.
So, the official Instagram account of Arnold Sports shared a clip of the Austrian Oak doing an interview with Logan Paul, with the caption: “never stop training💪.”
In the April 8 post, the American influencer and professional wrestler asked the 7-time Mr. Olympia why, at this age, Schwarzenegger still goes to the gym.
In response, Schwarzenegger said, “For the same reason, is why am I having breakfast today, I had breakfast yesterday had breakfast 10 years ago. Why am I still having breakfast right it's like why am I still sleeping. I slept 20 years ago. I slept 10 years ago sleeping.”
Listening to the answer, Logan said, “So it's so rooted in who you are.”
Schwarzenegger added, “Exactly the same is with training. Training is part of my life, it's that simple. Nothing will ever change until I die. I will be working out.
And I will be having a great time in the gym. And I will be getting the pump and. I want to feel good. Like I said, it's tough enough as it is when you get older. But you have to hold on.”
Schwarzenegger, 78, lives by this philosophy and is often seen exercising at Gold's Gym, with fans at the Arnold Classic, or with his son Joseph Baena. He is even seen pumping up with 8-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman on many occasions.
According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, exercise is not a luxury for older adults; it is a recommendation. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans also recommend:
- Balance training
- 75 to 150 minutes of energetic aerobic activity or 150 to 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity
- 2 days of muscle-strengthening movements.
During an interview with Fortune in 2024, Schwarzenegger said, “First thing when you get up, you should jump on the bike, or you should go out and walk or run or do your exercise.
Later on in the day, everyone wants to grab your time…if it’s the kids, if it's your partner, if it's your work, there are endless amount of reasons why you cannot get it done later on in the day. Get up in the morning and don’t think. Don’t think, just get going with the exercise.”
While it is true that Schwarzenegger still trains daily, his workout looks different now.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Opens Up on His Current Training Approach
During an interview with Business Insider in 2025, Schwarzenegger discussed his current work schedule.

He said, “I sometimes trained five hours a day with weights. That's a lot of stress on the body, and clearly the body was not meant to do all that.”
He also believes that older people must start lifting with dumbbells, kettlebells, or a barbell. The legend is not asking to abandon free weights. He is asking to understand the arc and master control first so that the joints don't get hurt.
The legend said, “For me today, the machines are better simply because there's certain movements I can't do because of shoulder problems or knee problems.
We have so many sophisticated machines now that people sometimes get into the habit of using a machine when, in fact, the free weights at the beginning are better.”
According to him, his daily exercise routine these days includes:
- 25 sets of weightlifting exercises
- Biking for cardio for nearly 45 minutes
So, for him, consistency is the key.
