Arnold Schwarzenegger's warning about raising a 'generation of wimps' has resurfaced and is sparking new debate. Even though the comments were from a 2023 interview they gained new life after being shared on social media, putting his views on toughness and resilience back in the spotlight.

On March 23, the Instagram handle JOE restarted the conversation by sharing a post, captioning:

“He said what he said 👀, highlighting the 7-time Mr. Olympia's warning that society is raising a “generation of wimps”, overly concerned with hurting feelings.

The resurfaced post is rooted in The Austrian Oak’s interview for SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show in 2023 where he came to promote his book “Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life.” During the interview, Schwarzenegger said, “It’s nice to be considerate, I totally agree with that. But let’s not over-baby the kids, and let’s not over-baby the people.”

Schwarzenegger argued that people who baby themselves cannot reach their full potential.

He said, “The more you struggle, the further you’re going to go, and the stronger you’re going to get. You have to be able to struggle, and if you’re not able to, work on that”.

According to the bodybuilding legend, it is the duty of adults to teach children to be tough and “go through those painful moments”.

For him, the human mind is a bicep. Just as muscles need pain to grow, so does the mind.

He continued, “The more you experience the things that you really don’t like, the more you can grow, and the tougher you get, and the more you can handle. It’s just that simple”.

These remarks sheds some light into an the ongoing debate around modern parenting styles and developing grit in child as they grow.

While promoting his book at the show, the former Mr. Olympia has argued “that failure, hard work and discomfort are what make people stronger,” he also revealed 7 tools for finding purpose in one’s life in the book.
