Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Daughter Katherine Opens Up on the Medical Sides of Motherhood

While her dad is busy bashing up bad guys and saving the world, Katherine Schwarzenegger is focusing on something equally important.

Lady Schwarzenegger's podcast, BDA Baby, teamed up with Yahoo for a four-part series featuring conversations on modern motherhood. And one of her candid parenting conversations was with lactation expert Tamari Jacob.

Together, they tackled some of the biggest myths surrounding breastfeeding and pumping, dropping some hard truths for new moms along the way.

"Pumping is hard enough. Let's not make it worse than it has to be. The things that I have seen online is just insane, and it puts moms in such a bad headspace."

Their conversation centered on how misinformation spread on social media has left new moms feeling overwhelmed at a time that is already difficult for them.

The discussion involved topics like breast pumps, with Jacob stressing that many new moms are unaware that pumping is actually not supposed to be painful.

Jacob criticized misleading marketing ads on wearable pumps, which show moms easily exercising while pumping.

“You really cannot do yoga in majority of those wearable pumps,” Jacob said, laughing at advertisements. Instead, she encouraged moms to focus on using a reliable “primary pump” before getting the wearable ones marketed for convenience.

On May 7, Katherine Schwarzenegger announced that she was teaming up with Yahoo News for a new parenting-focused content series titled Motherhood: The Ultimate Unbalancing Act. The series aims to focus on the mental, personal, and relational challenges of modern motherhood.

In the video, Schwarzenegger described motherhood as “a constant state of managing so much,” so she feels there needs to be a podium for conversations like balancing identity, career, relationships, and community after having children. And the conversation with Tamari Jacob is one of many that the show brings out.

Katherine Schwarzenegger herself has three young kids, so she understands the struggles that come before, during, and after having a baby. But besides her own experiences, she learned a few things from her mom, too.

Maria Shriver’s advice for her daughter, Katherine Schwarzenegger

In one of her books, Kat and Brandy, Schwarzenegger said that her mother, journalist Maria Shriver, is a constant source of guidance for her, and one of the best things she learned from her mother is how to have a positive inner dialogue.

“A lot of us can get stuck in negative self-talk, and that doesn't do anything positive for our confidence,” she says.

“The great gift that my mom gave to us kids from the beginning was always an open line of communication that was judgment-free and criticism-free,” she says.

“That allowed us to be able to talk to our mom about anything and everything...That was a huge gift that, as a mother, I really hope to be able to give to my kids.”

This approach made them comfortable around their parents and made it easy to talk to them whenever they felt stuck or lacked confidence.
