Arnold Schwarzenegger's diet and nutrition measurements when he weighed 250lbs
Recently, Arnold Schwarzenegger has promoted a plant-based diet. However, during his peak year, his diet was far more carnivorous.
During his competitive bodybuilding years, Schwarzenegger's high-protein diet was designed to support the intense training volume and body weight that helped him dominate Mr. Olympia.
In a recent post, the Men's Active magazine's Instagram account measured Arnold's golden-era diet and nutrition, highlighting how scientifically he used his meals to maintain his body.
On July 23, the Instagram post (@mensactivemag) said, “Arnold Schwarzenegger weighed close to 250 lbs (113 kg) at the peak of his competitive bodybuilding career. He trained up to five hours a day. He ate to match it. His rule, repeated in interviews for decades: one gram of protein for every pound of bodyweight – roughly 250 grams a day, split across five to six meals."

- The post also offered a glimpse into Arnold's daily diet at that time, which included:
- Breakfast: 3 eggs
- Lunch: a skinless chicken breast
- Mid-afternoon snacks: cheese
- Dinner: 8 oz of lean beef
Apart from that, he used to consume “two protein shakes built from milk and egg protein in between”.
Talking about carbohydrates, the post said, “Carbohydrate intake stayed comparatively low for someone his size. Most of the remaining calories came from fat: egg yolks, whole milk, red meat, butter, cheese. Cheat meals were allowed and specific – a cheeseburger, a pizza – deployed occasionally, never banned outright.”
As the post explained, seven-time Mr. Olympia stuck to the same rule for decades: one gram of protein for every pound of bodyweight. It wasn't a trend he followed but a fixed ratio he applied without exception.
According to Men's Active, a typical day in Schwarzenegger's competition diet included:
- 27g of carbohydrates
- 90 g of fat
- 256g of protein.
The post also compared Schwarzenegger's long-standing protein target with recently updated U.S. protein recommendations.
Men's Active post added, “On January 7, 2026, the U.S. government raised the federal protein guideline for the first time in decades — from 0.8 grams per kilogram to 1.2–1.6 grams per kilogram. At Arnold’s competition weight, that new ceiling works out to roughly 136–181 grams a day. His self-imposed number was 250... The rule that built the Austrian Oak was never ahead of the science. It was simply higher than anyone else was willing to go”.
Although Schwarzenegger followed a high-protein, non-vegetarian diet during his peak, as mentioned earlier, his current diet has changed completely.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s current plant-based diet
According to Kate Neudecker of Men's Health, in an edition of the Arnold Pump Club newsletter, Schwarzenegger admitted to consuming 80 percent less meat than before.
Citing a study by Amy Banaszek and colleagues, Schwarzenegger said, “Some people feel forced to eat animal proteins to support muscle and strength."
Schwarzenegger said the findings challenge a long-held assumption in fitness circles.
"But, you actually have more flexibility than you've been led to believe. New research suggests that it doesn't matter if you eat plant protein or animal protein; both dieting styles can deliver similar body transformation results," Schwarzenegger added.
So, what does Schwarzenegger eat currently?
According to the article, his diet looks like:
- Breakfast: oatmeal or Greek yogurt with granola
- Lunch: often a salad with a plant-based burger, chicken, or salmon. Other times, he has a salad with an omelet or scrambled eggs.
- Dinner: soup.
While Schwarzenegger once built his physique on a high-protein, meat-heavy diet, his current approach reflects his long-standing belief that plant-forward eating can also support health and fitness.
