The 1980 Mr. Olympia was a controversial event and, at the same time, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s last Mr. Olympia appearance. The Austrian Oak had won 6 consecutive Mr. Olympia titles from 1970 to 1975, and after making a name for himself in Hollywood, he decided to compete in the 1980 Olympia competition.

Despite being out of the competitive world for 5 years, Schwarzenegger impressed his fans upon his return with his massive physique and overall mass, earning his 7th Mr. Olympia title.

The physique of the 7-time Mr. Olympia from that event still elicits a strong reaction from fans, as evidenced by an Instagram post from Arnold Sports Festivals on June 9.

The Instagram post features a photo of Schwarzenegger with the caption, “vintage photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger during his 1980 comeback💪🏻🔥.”

So, despite staying away from professional bodybuilding, how did he manage that look?

Talking about his move back in the day Schwarzenegger once said, “We’re going to start shooting the first few scenes [of Conan The Barbarian] in October, and so I really wanted to be muscular because the idea was that Conan was a very muscular, heroic looking guy, and that I should be in top shape… the closer I came to this competition more people started speculating on the idea that I would be competing and the more I started thinking about the possibility.”

So, he was already preparing for the movie, which helped him in the competition.

During the 1980 Mr. Olympia, he weighed nearly 235 lbs and, at 6’2”, entered the stage and shocked everyone. Though his overall conditioning was not that intense, Schwarzenegger retained his famous chest development and legendary poses.

He knew how to rule over your weaknesses, especially through his legendary vacuum pose. Schwarzenegger was famous for his stage presence.

Whenever he used to enter the stage, it was very hard to look away from him.
