In bodybuilding, size is often king. But for Shawn Ray, taking on giants like Ronnie Coleman was just another day at the office.

One of the most respected bodybuilders of the 1900s, Shawn Ray, was known not only for competing with one of the most complete physiques but also for facing massive rivals like Markus Rühl, Paul Dillett, and Jean-Pierre Fuch.

Muscle Mind Media shared a short reel on its YouTube channel where Shawn Ray revealed that size alone is not sufficient to earn any title. The sport is all about completeness and overall balance.

Looking back at his career, he says, “There's only two guys I never beat. Lee Haney, eight-time Mr. Olympia, and Dorian Yates, six-time Mr. Olympia. Ronnie Coleman I beat for five years before he became Mr. Olympia”.

According to him, “The reason I was existing was because of my completeness. Even when I won the national championships, I beat Phil Hill, who at the time was the biggest bodybuilder that I had competed against in person. Bill Hill was on another level, and I beat him for the overall title”.

It only shows his competitiveness and determination during his prime.

Even his consistency was at such a level that, in more than 30 vital bodybuilding competitions, he finished below 5th place only once. And the rest of the time, he secured his place in the top 5.

Shawn Ray’s consistency and life after competition

Shawn Ray had demonstrated a consistent career in the sport. Between 1990 and 2001, Shawn Ray secured a top-5 finish at the Mr. Olympia competition.

During his prime, he finished second twice, proving his balance and long-term dominance on the most respected stage of bodybuilding before retiring in 2001.

After his retirement, he remained more deeply engaged in the sport.

With a sharp business mindset, Shawn Ray has established powerful links with sponsors. He is now known as a respected spokesperson for the sport and its events. Shawn Ray now uses his voice and experience to stay active and influential within bodybuilding.
