Ben Askren Shares Training Footage Months After Major Health Scare

Ben Askren is back in the gym just months after a life-threatening double lung transplant. The wrestling icon shared training footage on social media ahead of a scheduled return to competition against Belal Muhammad.

This showcases a major recovery for Askren right after undergoing a double lung transplant, after he was hospitalized in June with pneumonia following a life-threatening danger.

"4 months ago, I was on my deathbed. 3 months ago, I couldn't stand unassisted. 2 months ago, I was still using a walker," Askren wrote alongside the footage. "What's your excuse?? Tie them up tight and let's get to work. Couldn't be more grateful to be back at it and for all of the support the community gave me during such a hard time."

In the video, Askren was seen wearing a new pair of shoes from the wrestling brand Rudis. The whole MMA world showed its support, including Dana White, who previously donated to fundraisers supporting Askren's medical treatment during his recovery.

The footage marks a significant step forward for the 40-year-old, who had only begun jogging again in September, his first time doing so since surgery.

Ben Askren Set to Compete at RAF 11 Months After Double Lung Transplant

Ben Askren fought 3 times in the UFC and retired in November 2019 after losing to Jorge Masvidal. His last fight with Masvidal will be etched in UFC history. UFC 239 saw Askren knocked out in 5 seconds, the fastest knockout in UFC History.

Askren is already back in the competition game. Askren is set to face Belal Muhammad at RAF 11. The event takes place on July 18 at Panther Arena in Milwaukee.

“Funky” now makes his RAF debut, where he has served as one of the matchmakers since its inception less than a year ago. Muhammad was just as shocked as everyone else when he heard Askren was returning to the mats.

"When they said, 'Yeah [he's healthy],' I said, 'Bro, it'd be an honor.' He's a legend. His story is legendary. To be a part of that, and to be his homecoming match, or even his end match, his last one, it's gonna be cool. I've trained with him. I've talked to him. He's a good guy, cool guy." Muhammad told TMZ Sports.

Askren is obviously one of the wrestling names to reckon with, being a 2x NCAA champion. But after what he has been through, does he have what it takes after his condition?
