Bodybuilding Icon Arnold Schwarzenegger Collaborates to Give Former Prison Inmates a Chance at a Better Life

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s rare 1977 Excalibur has returned to the limelight. But wait! This isn’t just about another celebrity car makeover. In a heartwarming blend of craftsmanship, social purpose, and automotive nostalgia, this project has put a spotlight on second chances...
The Austrian Oak is a man of many roles, be it bodybuilding icon, Hollywood Superstar, or Governor. This time, to restore his 1977 Excalibur Series III roadster, he chose The West Coast Customs Academy, which helps former prison inmates rebuild their lives.
I’ll be back
Even after almost 3 decades, Schwarzenegger’s iconic Terminator’s “I’ll be back” continues to inspire generations with a spirit of redemption. Founder and CEO Ryan Friedlinghaus started the West Coast Customs Academy to help individuals who struggle in traditional academic environments yet excel in hands-on skill-based trades. Thereafter, in partnership with the Justice Care and Opportunities Department, their mission expanded to offer career paths to former inmates as they often deal with an overwhelming number of barriers when trying to re-enter the workforce.
As posted by Elex Michaelson a few hours ago, we saw Schwarzenegger’s personal involvement has elevated this project. He arrived at the Academy early this month for the official reveal, taking time to shake hands with every student, congratulate them on their work, and listen to their stories. His message was simple: everyone deserves a second chance- "This is why I love West Coast Customs! When someone from this group says "I'll be back," with this amazing program at West Coast Customs, they have a chance to come back! People can learn how to restore a car, make a living, and be able to take care of a family."
Since its launch two years ago, the academy has already graduated five classes, with the majority of its students securing meaningful employment. And beyond the academy, West Coast Customs (WCC) itself has a long history of customizing vehicles for celebrities. On the reality show Inside West Coast Customs, the shop has worked with high-profile names such as Shaquille O’Neal, Mark Wahlberg, will.i.am, Justin Bieber, and Conan O’Brien.
For Schwarzenegger, supporting this initiative aligns deeply with his long-standing commitment to rehabilitation and opportunity. Throughout his political and philanthropic life, he has championed vocational training programs, prison education, and pathways to reintegration.
