Canelo Alvarez Reveals Why Late Arrivals at the Gym Bother Him-“I’m Going to Train”

One thing that athletics imparts to athletes is a sense of punctuality and discipline, and it seems like Canelo Alvarez is setting the standard.

In a recent interview, boxing champion Canelo Alvarez was giving his two cents on certain patterns he notices in his gym every day.

Basically, he shares a mindset lesson about discipline and consistency. He was straightforward in his opinion, criticizing fighters who only show urgency to train when they have to prepare for an upcoming fight.

"Sometimes I'm bothered when I see other boxers in the gym because they arrive all tired. Wake up, m***********! This is not a wake, you come here to train. I don't even have a fight booked and imagine, I'm the first to arrive to the gym and the last one to leave."

Alvarez insists that fighters who are serious about their training have to hit the gym every day. He was quite vocal with his displeasure, calling out slackers, asking, "You don't need a fight booked, like, 'Ah, we signed for a fight, I'm going to train.' What do they think?"

The undisputed champion revealed that his discipline towards training never changes, regardless of whether he has an upcoming fight or not. He shared that he arrives first at the gym and leaves last, even during periods when he is not following an active training camp.

"Have you fought 10 rounds? No. Have you been a world champion? No. So why do you need a fight booked to come to the gym? You need to be here every day if you want to be a world champion," Alvarez chastised.

The boxing legend noted that great athletes cannot afford to follow a loose discipline. For them, training must be a part of their everyday life. According to Alvarez, fighters who train every day are always prepared when an opportunity to fight suddenly arrives.

Is Canelo Alvarez currently training for any upcoming fights?

Alvarez will be back in the ring on September 12, in Saudi Arabia, on a card titled ‘Mexico Against the World.’ He will return a year after his loss to Terence Crawford, and the event will feature many top fighters.

Following his fight against Crawford, the boxer underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow. The procedure was aimed at removing loose particles and debris, which had been causing Alvarez chronic pain in his elbow.

Talking about this return to Boxing News 24/7, he spoke about how his training has affected his mindset during his recovery.

“Honestly, I feel very good. I’ve been training … and I feel extremely good and happy because sometimes that’s what you need,” he said.

Canelo Alvarez's fight in Riyadh will mark his comeback after his recovery period. As per Boxing News 24/7, the event will have him going up against Christian Mbilli for the WBC Super Middleweight Championship title.

Mbilli, often nicknamed "Solid Rock," remains the undefeated champion and boasts a high knockout rate.
