Cardio surgeon reveals how leg workouts can protect your heart

Not hitting legs often? You might want to rethink that.
A solid leg workout could actually be the key to a healthier heart. How? Dr. Jeremy London explains exactly why.
Cardiologist Jeremy London, MD, took to his Instagram to share his leg workout while delivering an important message to viewers, saying, “When most people think about protecting their heart, they think cardio. However, muscle mass is a key predictor of overall health and longevity. Your lower body makes up the largest muscle group. So if your goal is to build muscle and improve metabolic health, your legs deserve serious attention.”
The doctor further explains that strengthening the leg muscles can significantly improve glucose control, helping the body manage blood sugar levels more effectively while lowering the risk of metabolic diseases.
In addition, increasing muscle mass in the legs can “improve your lipid profile, lower blood pressure, and reduce systemic inflammation.”
“On top of that, working large muscle groups increases nitric oxide production, which helps blood vessels relax and improves overall vascular health,” Dr. Jeremy concludes.
What Dr. Jeremy says isn’t new. Science has already backed it. A 2024 study found that resistance training can significantly improve cardiovascular health. Well, that’s not all, the doctor even tells us what the three ‘red flags’ of a weak heart are.
Dr. Jeremy Breaks Down the 3 Red Flags Your Heart Might Be in Trouble
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Dr. Jeremy highlighted that patients with a healthy heart tend to do much better than those with an unhealthy one.
The first piece of advice he gave his viewers was to have a registered doctor perform a physical examination of their heart.
However, he flagged three major red flags that should send you straight to a doctor:
“Shortness of breath when walking, the inability to lie flat and breathe comfortably, and swollen legs. All the signs of many different heart conditions should be red flags.”
Given that, what do you think about your heart health?
