Chris Bumstead reveals the mindset that keeps him training despite fatherhood
Becoming a parent is no easy job. It requires all your time, energy, and more. While most may find it challenging to make time for workouts while juggling a full-time career and parenting, Chris Bumstead came to prove a point. A recent Instagram post he shared gained immense traction online, especially among other parents.
Bumstead, father to Bradley (2) and Blake (5 months), realized he wouldn't find the right time to train.
“Been really enjoying the gym again. For a while, I kept waiting until life settled down. Better sleep. More energy. More time. But with two young kids, work, and everything else, that season probably isn’t coming anytime soon,” a part of his Instagram caption said.
Bumstead did what most new parents do- wait for the right time to resume training. However, it didn’t take long for him to realize that this would not happen, and he would have to somehow make time to train in his current state.
“You can focus on what you don’t have, or make the most of what you do have. The circumstances don’t always change. But you always get to choose your attitude, your effort, and how you show up anyway,” he said in the caption.

In the Instagram video, he is seen performing various lower-body exercises. These include lunges, front squats, and hyperextensions.
Despite juggling work and fatherhood, Bumstead prioritizes strength training- even now.
Chris Bumstead shares his strength training philosophy and routine
Bumstead has never let anything come in the way of his workouts- be it fatherhood, a busy schedule, or a shoulder injury. Although the injury led to several months of non-training, he was soon back to the gym with renewed vigor.
As per Barbend, Bumstead followed an upper-body routine that focused on muscle recovery, strength building, and stability. Furthermore, his priority was to increase the range of motion in his shoulder after his injury.
His upper-body workout focused on improving stability, including-
- Fly wheel machine
- Lat pulldowns
- Dumbbell bench press
- Triceps pushdowns
- Machine preacher curls
His training philosophy was simple- an injury or a busy schedule shouldn’t stop him from training. He would find the time to engage in any sort of workout that would benefit his body and mind.
“Going through a time of not wanting to show up but still choosing to show up anyway; that’s been me in the gym for the last six months,” he said, as per Barbend.
There’s a lot to learn from Bumstead’s general training philosophy. How have you made the time to squeeze in workouts in your busy schedule?
