Common Myths About 6 Pack Abs To Avoid For Sculpting a Stronger Core

Jan 31, 2026, 10:00 AM CUT

From ‘more sets give more abs’ to ‘crunches equals abs,’ there are so many myths surrounding ab workouts that sound true but miss the mark completely.

In reality, more than hardcore training regimens, knowing how your body works and what factors help burn fat effectively works best. Believing myths will do nothing but waste your time and obstruct your progress.

So if you want abs like Thor (before and after Endgame ofcourse), or Captain America, start by ignoring these myths about the abs workout.

Common myth you need to ignore if you want 6-pack abs

Myth 1: Carbohydrates are 'the' enemy of Abs

No, they are not. Carbs are like the fuel that keeps your body running, and we all know what happens when a car is out of fuel. It’s true that fast-absorbing carbs like sports drinks and white breads result in an insulin spike that can be an obstacle in your weight loss journey.

If we choose a better alternative, it can work. Replace those carbs with fruits, vegetables, legumes, brown rice, beans, and oatmeal.

Myth 2: Do sit-ups and crunches all day long

The universal guideline that everyone follows for their ab routine is crunching their bodies and doing sit-ups. But in the words of rapper Rick Ross, those are just ‘Accusations!’

Burning abdominal fat is the only way to get chisled abs, and performing just sit-ups and crunches can’t achieve that. Pair them with Russian twists, side bends, standing rope crunches, dip bar knee raises, and then see the difference.

Myth 3: Cardio is your best friend

While cardio is great for improving heart health and general fitness, it is strength training that tones your body. Exercises like squats, deadlifts, and lunges engage your core and build abdominal strength.

Myth 4: Never stop exercising

When it comes to training, the biggest myth that needs busting is that every day is training day. The concept of rest doesn’t exist. In reality, it is during rest days that your abs will recover, repair, and grow. But you also don’t have to just sit around during rest day, you can take small walks or do yoga.

Myth 5: Supplements can get you 6-pack abs

No, they can’t. Although supplements like green tea are known to burn fat, they won’t transform you into Chris Hemsworth. A rigorous training session and carefully curated diet planares the only way to go.

Myth 6: Keep your speed constant

Nobolikesike change, but sometimes change is the only way forward. And it works best when trying to get 6-pack abs. A Spanish study once revealed that faster reps activate muscle growth in your abdomen. But when trying to get abs, try mixing up the speed for best results.

Myth 7: Stress is good

Stress is never good, not for abs, not for your health in general. Stress induces a cortisol spike, which in turn is an obstacle to losing weight.

How to get six-pack abs?

Here are some exercises that will transform your body to look like Brad Pitt’s from Fight Club.

  • Overhead Squats - 3-4 sets of 20-30 reps
  • Prone knee to opposite elbow - 3-4 sets of 10-15 reps
  • Press-ups - 3-4 sets of 15 reps
  • Swiss ball hamstring curls - 3-4 sets of 10-15 reps
  • Split lunges/ Overhead press - 3-4 sets of 10-15 reps

Building a sustainable routine is the way, and do what works for you best.
