Dan MacPherson Reveals How He Broke Through a Fitness Plateau
Australian endurance athlete and actor, Dan MacPherson, reveals how he was doing everything right, but hit a fitness plateau. This is common among athletes and often leads to frustration. During a podcast with Thomas DeLauer, MacPherson revealed the strategic adjustments he made to reignite his progress.
With the help of professional nutritionists, MacPherson quickly realized that he needed to eat more efficiently and go for āintelligent under-trainingā to get over the plateau. Moreover, he shares how grateful he was to have his body, one that listened to him and adapted as per his requirements.
āIām really grateful to my body for always answering the demands that I put on it. And I ask it to do things- Itās like, āI need you to get bigger, I need you to get small, I need you to heal, I need you to make me look like this, I need you to take me as far as I can on this almond butter."

MacPherson developed a simple blueprint to help him get over his fitness plateau. This included-
- Intelligent under-training, focused on shorter, high-yield workouts instead of longer ones
- Shifting to a high-protein diet for muscle growth
- Lose fat while maintaining muscle with the help of fasted HIIT
- 5 sets of 5 reps of compound lifts
- Implementing boxing, jiu-jitsu, and Muay Thai into his sessions
Competing in grueling endurance events like Ironman Triathlons forced MacPhersonās body to adapt to whatever he demanded of it. However, for his new role in the film Beast, he had entirely new demands on his body.
What Dan MacPherson Had To Do To Become A āBeastā
In preparation for the TV series Beast, Russell Crowe required MacPherson to not only start fight training but also transform his body. That, according to MacPherson, was the hardest part.
āIāve never had a lesson in any type of martial art before in my life,ā he admits.
He was also required to bring down his body weight to fit into the role of a professional fighter. For all this, he had only 10 weeks. Of course, he delivered beautifully.
For this, MacPherson trained for realistic MMA choreography while trying to preserve muscle and lose body fat. This sometimes forced him to go into 1000-calorie deficits in a day, which can be quite challenging to navigate.
He further stresses the personal challenges he had to manage while preparing and shooting. This included taking care of his own meal prep, doing his duties as a father, and doing other household chores.
For MacPherson, becoming a āBeastā wasnāt about following a strict diet or over-training. It was simply about training intelligently and eating right, which helped him get ready for his new role.
