Donald Trump Restores Presidential Fitness Test in U.S. Schools

President Donald Trump signed a memorandum on May 5 to reinstate the Presidential Fitness test award, according to Fox News.

On May 5, the news channel's Instagram account posted the update and announced the news in the caption.

It says, “President Trump is officially bringing back the Presidential Fitness Test Award, restoring the competitive school-based program that was phased out in the Obama years.”

Trump signed this memorandum in the presence of some school-aged children, some athletes, including golfer Bryson DeChambeau, former hockey star TJ Oshie, and Todd Golden from the hockey world, as well as Cabinet members, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

This initiative has been promoted under the Make America Healthy Again approach.

During the event, the president said, “It is indeed a beautiful day to celebrate America’s athletic traditions and champions − physical fitness, and all those things I work so hard at on a personal basis.”

Pete Hegseth, the country's Defense Secretary, chose 161 school places at military installations. This will be mandatory for those schools to administer this test.

In the 1950s, the US government first introduced this test and evaluated schoolchildren through physical activities such as sit-ups and a 1-mile run. Awards were given to students who scored above the 85th percentile.

However, in 2012, the former President of the US, Barack Obama, decided to replace this with a new program focused on the students' long-term health.

While Trump brought back the fitness test, he also joked about his own fitness habits

The 79-year-old Trump even joked about his fitness habits, saying, “I work out so much, like about one minute a day max – if I’m lucky.”

However, before that, Trump highlighted himself as a golfer and sportsman, emphasizing mental and physical strength.

He said, “It’s all about the mind,” and admitted that success in life comes from mental strength and discipline.

Many times, Trump has spoken openly about his love of fitness. For instance, in a 2020 social media post, he defended his golf outings and acknowledged them as a form of exercise.

He said, “I play VERY fast, get a lot of work done on the golf course, and also get a ‘tiny’ bit of exercise. Not bad!”

Apart from that, in another interview, he said, “I get exercise. I mean, I walk, I this, I that. I run over to a building next door.”
