“Don’t Beat Me Up”- When Sydney Sweeney Detailed Her Sparring Sessions and Boxing Workouts With World Champion Christy Martin
Sydney Sweeney certainly went all-out for Christy Martin’s documentary film.
From putting on significant weight to training relentlessly, she committed to all-day workouts to build that boxer’s physique. And, in an unexpected twist, she even stepped in to take a shot or two from the legendary champion herself.
Recently, the actress was questioned by paparazzi about whether she sparred with Christy. In response, Sweeney said she certainly sparred with her, describing it as chaotic. I did, I sparred with her, I was terrified,” Sydney expressed.
She further added, ‘I was like, you’re gonna beat me up like I don’t know if I wanna go too hard.’ The paparazzi also asked whether the intense training still affects her workouts today, considering the film has already aired.
With a smile, the Euphoria star emphasized, “I have way better technique when I work out now, like I can go to a gym and look at the guy and be like, you ain’t doing that right.”
Despite her hard work, the film tanked at the box office. It was made with a budget of $15 million; however, it barely earned $2 million worldwide, making it a huge disaster. For Sweeney, though, it was a victory in itself.
“I did this for her,” Sydney Sweeney on the movie’s disaster
In her conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Sweeney revealed that when she first got her hands on the script, she didn’t know who Christy was. But after reading about her, she wanted to pay tribute to her legacy.
Upon being asked for her opinion on the mixed public reception following the film’s release, she said, “I put a lot of love and hard work into this, so it feels good that people are recognizing that and that the story is resonating with people. But for me, I've always said Christy's opinion is the only one that matters to me. I did this for her, and she loves it, so I'm good.”
The movie might have collapsed, but it certainly became a documentary on the legendary career of Christy Martin, who holds an elite record of 49 victories in 59 fights.
