Duck Meat or Chicken Meat: Which One You Should Pick Based on Nutritional Values and Impact

Duck and chicken are both poultry, but don’t be deceived: their nutritional values are quite different. And hence, each has its own way of serving your body.

However, picking the best-suited one to fulfill your nutritional requirements can often be tricky. So, here’s a fact-based breakdown of the nutritional values of duck and chicken meat to help you choose based on your goals.

Calories and Macronutrients

Let’s not sugarcoat anything, the duck is denser and richer, while the chicken is leaner. If we were to judge by calories, 100g of cooked duck packs about 337 calories, while chicken comes in lower at 239 calories. Here, the duck is a clear winner, but mind you, more calories do not mean more protein.

When it comes to protein content, chicken is way ahead of duck. One hundred grams of chicken packs 27 g of protein, while the same amount of duck carries just 19 g of protein. If you are looking to increase your protein intake, you should go for chicken over duck.

However, duck is not totally on the losing side. Duck's meat generally contains significantly more total and saturated fats, almost twice as much. That’s the sole reason why duck tastes richer and more indulgent.

Vitamins & Minerals

While chicken wins when it comes to protein content, duck is the clear winner in micronutrients. Duck is richer in iron and copper, which are critical for blood and metabolic health. That’s not all, it contains higher levels of vitamin B1, B2, vitamin A, E, and even vitamin D.

Chicken, on the other hand, contains more selenium and calcium, nutrients that support bone strength and antioxidant pathways.

So, What Should You Pick?

Let’s keep it simple: if your goal is weight control and heart health, lean options like skinless chicken are usually better since they contain fewer calories and less fat. However, if you’re looking for richer flavor and higher micronutrient density, duck can be a much better alternative.

So, which one are you opting for in your next diet, chicken or duck?
