Fitness expert Dana Brown encourages men to train like farmers, not bodybuilders

While many spend staggering amounts on gym memberships, fitness expert Dana Brown advised against joining a gym. Instead, she asked men to train like farmers.

Brown appeared on the June 10 episode of the Great Day @ 9a show on the WFSB 3 YouTube channel to provide men with fitness tips on the occasion of Men's Fitness Month. Contrary to the common way of maintaining fitness by working out in a gym, Brown advised men to prioritize functional fitness over building muscle mass.

"I was thinking about all the things the guys need. And, forget about the gym bro workouts. Train like a farmer."

After being questioned by the show's host about the exact meaning of training like a farmer, Brown replied that it means aiming for functional fitness over anything else. She also said that it involves "trying to get your grip strengths and everything [right] about your longevity."

Well, not many other than Brown can detail which activities she wants men to include in their routine that she calls training like a farmer. But there's one she specifically stressed, and that's the farmer's walk.

Brown advocated for men to go for farmers' walks, calling it a "good one" to maintain overall fitness. However, she also suggested controlling the weight associated with it, as performing it with excessive weight could hamper the posture of an individual.

Well, with Brown advocating for the farmer's walk so actively, let's take a look at how to perform the exercise.

How to perform a farmer's walk correctly?

Besides Brown, a report from Healthline also detailed the benefits of including farmers' walks in the workout regimen. It mentioned that the exercise targets almost all the muscle groups in the body, along with helping to improve cardiovascular capacity.

Additionally, another publication from Men's Health described the ways to perform farmers' walks without errors. So, let's take a look at how to do it:

  • Select two equal weights to carry, according to your capacity. Grab one in each hand tightly, with your arms in their natural position.
  • Squeeze your forearms and shoulder blades to activate your lats. Take care to maintain a proper, straight posture, and focus on your way ahead.
  • Start walking forward slowly with an upright posture and continue for as long as you can.

Brown may have just shed light on the farmer's walk once more, but many have been using it to maintain their fitness for a long time.

So, now that you know about its benefits, will you also include the farmer's walk in your training regimen?
