Former Olympic Gymnast Shawn Johnson East Reveals Her Strength-Building Workout
Shawn Johnson East may have retired from artistic gymnastics, but working out remains a significant part of her routine, especially strength-building workouts.
East rose to prominence at the 2008 Olympics after bagging the gold medal in the balance beam. However, in a recent episode of Women's Health's Strong Like, she said that gymnastics still makes her "feel superwoman."
East stated that the workouts she does today are primarily focused on strength-building, unlike her gymnast-era sessions. In the episode, she revealed the various exercises in her training regimen.
Exercises she performs:
- Box jumps
- High pulls
- Pull-ups/chin-ups
- Bent-over rows
- Romanian deadlift to snatch
- Handstands
- Squats, paired with box jumps
- Dumbbell exercises
- Barbell exercises

Johnson also suggested doing 4 to 10 repetitions of each for 2 to 3 sets. Regarding the circuit, she said, “You can either start with it or finish with it. It's usually a finisher for me".
She usually mixes box jumps with squats and practices 8 to 10 reps at a time. She also revealed her goal, which is to clear the 40-inch mark in box jumping, where her current record is 39 inches.
According to the 34-year-old, she tried to “do a finisher at least a few times a week of a pyramid." Despite being awful, she accepted that "it works."

Stuff that Shawn Johnson carries to the gym
Johnson’s gym routine is stress-free and simple. During her busy day, she has to rush to the gym, and at that time, she does not even carry her gym bag.
But even if she does, she carries just the basics, like:
- Water.
- Lip gloss.
- Perfume.
- Headphones.
The Olympic medalist uses her headphones occasionally because Johnson is "used to chaotic sounds with my kids."
She mostly wears outfits like leggings while visiting the gym. Sometimes Johnson even forgets her gym shoes and goes "barefoot."
