Four-Time Olympia Champ Jay Cutler Corrects Rear Delt Cable Crossover Mistakes

Feb 5, 2026, 8:48 PM CUT

Jay Cutler, the 4-time Mr. Olympia, may have last competed in 2013, but he still knows several techniques, including the proper way to perform rear-delt cable-crossovers.

In a January 24 YouTube video on his own channel, the former bodybuilding legend explained a process for gym-goers to correct their rear-delt cable-crossover mistakes.

Cutler said, “Cable crossover apparatus [are] a little tricky. I’m crossing the cables somewhere across my face, and I’m actually hooking using my finger tips to pull. I always talk about that with back movements, even with my pulldowns. For some reason, I can lock in a little easier using my fingers just as hooks”.

He also added, “You’re going to get a little bit of traps in here. Almost impossible, but just don’t come back too far”.

According to Bulk and Strength, some other mistakes that also need to be avoided include:

  • People often pull their hands back instead of out. It hits their lats more than their delts.
  • Many stop doing this movement halfway, which is a big mistake.
  • It is not recommended to use intense weight training without guidance.

Jay Cutler's blueprint to build desired delts

On September 14, 2025, Cutler shared the secret of massive delts in another YouTube video on his own channel. The bodybuilding legend not only follows the old-school tricks that he adopted during his peak, but he has also redesigned his exercises to maintain conditioning and muscle density.

Some of the workouts that Jay Cutler shared on his YouTube channel for delts include:

  • Lateral Raise Machine
  • Reverse Pec Deck
  • Face Pulls
  • Seated Side Lateral Raise Machine
  • Reverse Shoulder Press Machine.

Cutler also admitted that before starting his shoulder exercises, he pre-exhausts those muscles.

He said, “A little pre-exhaust, when I talk about pre-exhaust, it’s about getting blood in the muscle, getting the muscle activated, nutrient flow, not anything that’s heavy and compound, because sometimes it can be a little brutal on the shoulders. It seems like everyone who trained in my era had shoulder issues, and we’re trying to avoid that”.

He said he likes seated side lateral because “there's less swing”. He also prefers to do 2 distinctive movements for rears.

According to him, foot positioning is very important while performing a face pull. He said, “Get a little rhomboids and stuff in there, too. Just going to try to step back, good foot position, and lock it”.

So, are you thinking of building your delts by following Cutler's instructions?
