French Open Champion Alexander Zverev’s Powerful Workout Routine Over the Years

One of tennis’ biggest stars, Alexander Zverev, recently shared some of the most powerful and explosive tennis exercises that he swears by. In a YouTube video shared by Pro Player Training Zone, Zverev can be seen performing a set of simple exercises designed to be tennis-specific.

Although the exercises may look innocuous, they have helped him build the strength and endurance required for his consistent Grand Slam runs.

The video begins with Zverev performing a wall slam drill with a slam ball. Although the workout may not look like it’s doing much, it is actually conditioning his nervous system for explosive games. The drill teaches his body to transform from absorbing force to generating power when faced with an especially powerful contender.

With quick, light-foot movements that are followed by a violent ball throw, this powerful workout lays the very foundation of Zverev’s footwork.

The movement and force of the workout perfectly mimics the rotation and force requirement for powerful serves. The technique teaches Zverev how to efficiently accelerate from a calm base into a violent strike instantaneously.

He also performs a movement called Zverev’s cone, swerving between two cones at high speed. This movement helps him improve instant acceleration, controlled deceleration, and the ability to reorganize his feet under extreme pressure. The neuromuscular sharpening helps tune his legs to react intently and with precision during games.

Some of his other essential drills include:

  • Box jumps
  • Lateral swing drills with a double grip medicine ball
  • Shadow swings while tethered to a bungee band
  • Supported single-leg squat with a suspension trainer.

Along with his workout, he also follows a strict diet to keep himself in shape for peak performance.

Alexander Zverev’s Diet That Keeps Him in Peak Shape

Zverev must follow a very specific performance-focused diet that is primarily designed around lean protein, controlled carbs, and careful hydration. Due to having Type 1 diabetes, it is essential for him to stick to a strict, controlled diet that helps him feel active and energized through long, grueling matches.

As per the Australian Open, some of his go-to food choices include sweet potatoes and rice with chicken. This complete meal ensures that he gets a slow-digesting carbohydrate source along with a good mix of protein. Furthermore, he makes it a point to stay hydrated throughout his tournaments.

“Being diabetic for 24-plus years now, I know what type of food is good for me, what type of food spikes my sugar, and what type of food is stable with my sugar,” he admits.

Over the years, Zverev has learned how to manage his diet with surgical precision. “I’ve learned what type of food is good for me before matches, what’s better in the morning, and what’s better in the evening. It’s a learning process.”

A careful combination of smart nutrition, disciplined training, and careful management of his health condition has helped Zverev stay at the top of his game.

What are your thoughts about Zverev’s nutrition and training routine?
