Gina Carano has shown "impressive stuff on mat", claims coach before Ronda Rousey fight

Fifteen years after stepping away from fighting to chase Hollywood, Gina Carano still looks sharp and dangerous. With a comeback clash against Ronda Rousey just two months out, her coach can’t stop raving about how well she’s held up.

Her last fight ended in a brutal defeat, as she was knocked out by Cris Cyborg back in 2009. However, despite being away from fighting for years, her coach, John Wood, is impressed with how well she is doing, “being away from the sport, she hasn’t had the wear and tear. So things haven’t slowed down. The power’s still there. The speed’s still there.”

Gina Carano is a striking-heavy fighter with a Muay Thai background. Out of her seven MMA victories, three came via knockout and one via submission.

But despite her striking-first approach, Wood is quite impressed by her mat work. “I’ll be honest, she does some really impressive stuff on the mat where I’m like… You know, it’s really just about slowing things down. Because she’s a goer,” he said in his conversation on the Jaxxon podcast.

It’s indeed true that her mat work is impressive. Her socials have the proof. We also shouldn’t forget that she used to train at Xtreme Couture, a gym with wrestling-heavy fighters like Tyson Griffin, Mike Pyle, Evan Dunham, and more.

John Wood has a set plan for Gina Carano

With just two months remaining, Gina Carano is training every day for arguably the biggest opponent of her career. This time, she has the full support of the Syndicate MMA team, including former bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili.

Speaking about their game plan, John Wood, in his conversation with MMAFighting, stated, “She’s coming out there to win that fight. There is no intention of just showing up. Showing up’s not good enough. Showing up for me isn’t even acceptable.”

He further added, “We’re going out there to win the fight. We’ve got a great team and coaches around us that we’re going to put the best Gina Carano that you’ve seen, especially in a long time. I think she’s going to go out there and do amazing things.”

Carano is fired up, but we shouldn’t rule out Ronda Rousey at all. Who do you think is winning the battle? Tell us in the comments!
