Gina Carano's Training Camp and Partners Ahead of Her Ronda Rousey Bout, Revealed
More than a decade of silence is about to be broken as the American actress and MMA fighter, Gina Carano, returns to the ring to face martial artist Ronda Rousey. Her last professional bout was in August 2009, a TKO by Cris Cyborg. Now, the stage is set for May 16 at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles.
While the spotlight is set, the bigger question is how prepared Carano is for this comeback.
On March 25, the official Instagram account of Nemea Boxing “nemeaboxinggym,” dropped a post captioning “@ginajcarano putting in work…. Getting those hands sharp 🥊 Tune in May 16th on @netflix.”
Along with this, she is also training at another MMA facility, Syndicate MMA, based in Las Vegas, Nevada, under head coach John Wood.
Carano posted an Instagram video on March 5, and was training with Georgian mixed martial artist Merab Dvalishvili. While on the March 25 post, she shared the frame with coaches:
- Chris Ben-Tchavtchavadze (Pro, amateur boxing/MMA Coach)
- Ben Stanoff (Professional boxer, coach, and Nemea Boxing gym owner)
Earlier that week, Carano posted a video on her Instagram. In the post, the MMA artist tagged her team, which includes:
- Kevin Ross (Retired Muay Thai fighter and coach)
- John Wood (Head coach at Syndicate MMA)
- Chris Brennan (Head BJJ Coach at Syndicate MMA)
- Lucas “Skywalker” Brennan (Professional Athlete & Coach)
- Tyler “The Chosen One” Brennan (Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and MMA Amateur)
While her return to the ring definitely excites her fans, her coach reveals what they expect from her upcoming bout.
Coach John Wood Backs Gina Carano’s Comeback
John Wood, Carano's head coach, emphasized winning being more important than any other reason. He told MMA Fighting that, "It doesn’t matter what the purpose is.... it all comes down to plain and simple: Winning fights. Trying to win fights".
Supporting Carano, the coach of the former UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili, said that the first superstar in women’s MMA is "fired up." According to him, Carano is coming to win, and "I think she’s going to go out there and do amazing things.”
He also admitted that some people are questioning Carano and Rousey about their capabilities because they are returning after a long absence.
However, he thinks, "People are going to say this or say that. I’ll tell you both these ladies are training. Both these ladies still have it, and they’re both going come out there and put on a great fight".
