Hafthor Bjornsson fails at 511-kg deadlift world record at Enhanced Breakers

One kilogram doesn’t sound like a big deal- until it is the small difference between history and heartbreak. On July 11, 2026, Icelandic strongman Hafthor Bjornsson attempted a bold 511 kg deadlift at Enhanced Breakers 1. However, he fell short.

Bjornsson, who already holds the record for the heaviest deadlift at 510 kg (1,124 pounds), was attempting to break his own record by a small margin. However, at massive weights like these, even a 0.5 kg addition can represent a massive increase in the force required to complete a lift.

“You only truly fail when you stop trying. I’m not done. 511kg will go up!” he shared in an Instagram post on July 13.

Bjornsson’s attempt was nothing short of spectacular. Although “Thor” had already set a record on May 2, 2020, his current attempt received well-deserved applause from spectators worldwide. He posted several videos of the remarkable event on his Instagram account.

His progression looked like this:

  • 425 kg (937 lbs)
  • 470 kg (1,036 lbs)
  • 511 kg (1,126.6 lbs) – No Lift

In keeping with his usual, upbeat self, Bjornsson promised his fans, “Next time!”, as per Generation Iron.

Bjornsson shows no signs of stopping, as he squeezed in one last training session with his coach, Sebastian Oreb, before heading off to his home country of Iceland.

Bjornsson’s failed record attempt was not enough to stop the giant from squeezing in one last workout before flying home to Iceland. He ended his U.S. trip in the only way he knew how- with one final workout.

The Icelandic giant shared an Instagram video of his intense gym session with trainer Sebastian Oreb. In the video, he successfully attempts 5 reps on incline bench presses with 165 kg, proving his strength and power are nothing but legendary.

Although Bjornsson admitted that his body was feeling the aftereffects of his 511 kg deadlift attempt, it wasn’t enough to stop him from working out.

Bjornsson may have missed setting the 511 kg record by a hair, but he truly won the hearts of fans worldwide. Do you think Thor will be able to break his own deadlift world record in his next attempt?
