“Hate Training Arms”: Jay Cutler at 52 Still Goes Strong at the Gym

Jay Cutler, a four-time Mr. Olympia, built 22-inch biceps despite a surprising admission: he hates training arms. The bodybuilding legend finds the workouts boring and not challenging enough.

However, his dislike never stopped him from pursuing a complete physique. "I hate training arms and still do, but that didn’t stop me building them to 22!” Jay Cutler captioned his April 1 post.

Last year, during an interview, Cutler revealed the reason. Arm training did not challenge him enough, so he always found it boring. To him, exercises like the bicep curls, press downs felt repetitive. According to him, any movement that didn't push him to his limits was not something he enjoyed, but despite that, he still pushed himself and did it.

What he likes instead are back and leg workouts because they are much more challenging. He revealed that during his early days, he had a weak back, so he had to work extra hard to improve that.

"I’ve always loved movements that push you to your limits, where the weight feels brutal and every rep demands everything you’ve got. Legs were that for me."

But he soon realized that arms may be as challenging as legs or back, but they’re still part of the complete training regimen. And despite his dislike he still had to train them to win Mr. Olympia.

Jay Cutler full arms workout

In his prime Jay Cutler came up with a 30-minute workout to improve arm definition in a short span of time. In one of his YouTube videos, he revealed:

"I prioritize training arms together so I get that pump in one side, and it’s so much easier to pump the other side. It’s the same thing with the quads and hamstrings, that’s how I do that."

Here is the full breakdown of the arm workout:

  • V-Bar Pulldowns
  • Hammer Strength Selectorized Press (3 sets of 12 reps)
  • Dumbbell Kickbacks (3 sets of 2 reps)
  • Hammer Strength Bicep Curls (3 sets of 12-15 reps)
  • Standing Camber Bar Curls (3 sets of 12 reps)
  • Alternate Dumbbell Curls (3 sets of 8-9 reps)
