“He Can Lose to Andrew” , Derek Lunsford’s ‘Smart Move’ To Skip the 2026 Arnold Classic, Praised by Fouad Abiad

Bodybuilders don’t skip shows without reason. When an athlete decides to sit out a major contest, it’s often a strategic move, especially when the end goal is the Mr. Olympia title. Expected once again to take place in Las Vegas, the city where legends are made. Rising athletes like Matt Greggo have opted out of the Arnold Classic to commit early to Olympia preparation. Now lets see what Fouad Abiad said regarding Derek’s smart move of opting out from Arnold classic.

Fouad Abiad, retired pro bodybuilder, coach, and host known for his sharp analysis, has never been shy about calling things as he sees them. And this week, he weighed in on Derek Lunsford’s decision.

Just two days ago on Beyond the Stage TV, Fouad Abiad discussed Lunsford’s choice to avoid the 2026 Arnold Classic, and he didn’t hold back:

“I think it’s a smart move. I think you could go in there, he could lose to Andrew. If he loses to Andrew once, he might not beat him again… depends how they show up. He could lose to Andrew, he could lose to Martin, he could lose to anybody. It’s a big risk. He doesn’t need the money. He had a really big year last year. And he wants to build that legacy.”

In Fouad’s view, Lunsford is protecting his throne. As he achieved fame and money in the past few years he really dosn’t need any of it now, and it seems his eyes are on far more greater things than this.

Before the accolades, Derek was a kid playing soccer in school. Those early traits shaped the foundation that carried him into bodybuilding, where he climbed divisions, won titles, and made history. His rise wasn’t accidental,it was built on commitment, and skipping the Arnold could simply be the next step in a calculated journey.
