How 100-year-old David Attenborough has Stayed Healthy with Simple Fitness Habits
English broadcaster Sir David Attenborough turned 100 on May 8, 2026, and continues to work tirelessly towards his passion. Soon after hitting the 100-year mark, Attenborough shares priceless advice on how he managed to stay healthy all these years.
From following a largely plant-based diet to realizing his ikigai, Attenborough talks about simple yet effective everyday fitness habits that anyone can inculcate.
Attenborough admitted a fondness for cheese and fish and a preference for smaller meals, revealing his flexible mindset towards food. Rather than adhering to a strict lifestyle, he simply opted for a diet that replenishes his body, but with the least cost to planet Earth.
“But by and large, I've become much more vegetarian over the past few years than I thought I would ever be,” he told The Sun in 2017.

He also spoke at length about how his diet change had a positive impact on his physical and mental health as well as on the planet.
"We humans, alone on Earth, are powerful enough to create worlds, and then to destroy them," he reflects, when asked about his views on humanity's responsibility to Earth.
However, the secret to his longevity and fitness goes beyond a good diet. Here is what he has to share about his lifestyle.
Sir David Attenborough’s Philosophy On Longevity And Living Life
During an interview with The Telegraph, Attenborough admitted that he isn’t a fan of digital media.
”I’m not a big fan of electronic communication," he said. "When it comes to making television programs, I like to think that I know what the latest gear is and what tomorrow’s latest gear is, but maybe I'm deceiving myself."
Taking a break from the digital world can do wonders for our mental and physical health, Attenborough believes.
As a person who finds joy and peace in nature, he makes it a point to spend at least ten minutes a day outside.
“One of the simplest things that you should do when you get the chance is to stop, sit down, don’t move, keep quiet and wait 10 minutes. I’d be surprised if something pretty interesting didn’t happen,” he explains on his Call of the Wild podcast.
His philosophy toward life is simple yet precious. He greatly believes in the Japanese philosophy of “ikigai,” which is finding your purpose in life. For Attenborough, it's his work and passion.
A natural optimist, Attenborough holds high hopes for the future, especially from the youth. "In my lifetime I've witnessed a terrible decline. In yours, you could and should witness a wonderful recovery."
At 91, Sir David Attenborough said, “I see no reason whatsoever why I can’t live past 100," wishing to continue his quest for teaching people about the Earth's wonders. And he has continued to do just that.
