How Belmont Cameli Trained to Prepare for His Role in ‘Off Campus’
The Amazon Prime TV series Off Campus has had a glorious debut, primarily due to Belmont Cameli's mastery in playing the character, Garrett Graham. And the 28-year-old recently came clean on how filming for the series was an entirely different experience.
Cameli's on-screen character, Graham, is the hunk captain of the Briar University hockey team. But playing a hockey player is not like any other role. It requires a dedicated training program and a peak fitness level. Men's Health had the chance to see him live in action in the gym to see how he prepared for his role.
The actor also spoke to them about his outlook towards fitness, saying, "I have historically always been an all-in or all-out guy. I mean, like I will go really consistently for x amount of time, and if I miss a few days, I'm out of the gym, and then I gotta start back over."
The 28-year-old broke down his upper-body workout, explaining how he had to learn to skate for his role. Luckily, the makers had a gym built for the cast on set, which made working out easier and convenient. He also shared the mindset that helped him stay committed to fitness.
Cameli explained that preparing for a hockey player changed the way he saw his body and training. Instead of chasing extremely low body fat percentages, he aimed to become stronger to meet the physical demands of skating and taking hits on the ice like real players. Besides strength training, learning how to skate added another level of unpredictability to training.
"I've been training in the gym for probably over a decade now. Workouts have changed quite a bit since I was like 150 lbs playing football in high school. But yeah, I need to lift for my brain more than anything. I'm just better."
His training routine included the following exercises:
- Pullups (3 sets max reps)
- Cable Fly (3 sets of 10 to 12 reps)
- Single-Arm Cross Cable Pressdown (3 sets of 8 to 10 reps)
- Cable Triceps Kickback (2 to 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps)
- Rope Curl (3 sets of 8 to 10 reps)
But he was not the only cast member taking care of his fitness. Since there was a gym on the set, all of them trained together and sort of bonded over it.
How the Cast of Off Campus Trained Together
For some casts, free time on set means snacks and a nap. For the cast of Off Campus, it meant sprint races and sandbag circuits.
In a candid behind-the-scenes interview, the cast opened up about the fitness culture that developed while filming, which was filled with constant movement, competition, and pure chaos.
“Yeah, we bench each other, we squat each other,” Mika Abdalla, who plays Allie Hayes, said, laughing. “We’re always running. We’re always doing sprints.”
With limited time on set, the cast stored dumbbells inside trailers for quick pump sessions. They even passed sandbags back and forth, substituting for full workouts on busier days.
